How are Follower Counts Calculated?

  I noted that my Follower Count on my site indicated that I had 1,235 followers. However, adding up those following by email etc. the count is no where near that number. Where do those additional followers come from or how are they calculated?

  They likely come from people who are following your site via Twitter/FB/etc.
