How are legacy comments handled if threaded comments disabled?

I’m considering turning off the threaded comments feature on my site, but before I decide I wanted to understand what to expect regarding existing comments. My hope would be that the original threaded structure would remain in tact but that the option to create new threaded comments would disappear. Is this correct? Or will disabling comment threading force all of my old comments into non threaded format?

The structure will revert to the single level if you disable threaded comments.

And I hit submit too soon. Also, the comments will all go back to chronological order, so replies to comments that are made on other days will just be sorted by date. They will not appear underneath the comment they responded to.

That is what I was afraid of. Thanks!
