How are numbers of followers updated on a home page?

I have received over fifty emails from WordPress informing me that nnn is now following my blog. The number of followers shown on the blog home page has remained in the low thirties. When is that number of followers updated? Is that something that is supposed to happen automatically or do I need to initiate an update?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If those emails were from so called outlook.com accounts, those were spam accounts and removed by Staff. Also see https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/weird-followers/
