How are people making posts with my email address?

  • Unknown's avatar

Some spamer(s) are using my email address over and over to post spam to people’s blogs. I’ve changed my password a few times and none of my other accounts have been compromised. I have a very simple and old email address ((email visible only to moderators and staff)) so I think they are just entering it to get past your validation filters. How is a spammer posting to people’s blogs without logging in as me?

I continue to get all kind of ‘subscription’ confirmations for posts I never made. I’d like this to stop because it’s a security concern.

Can you provide an example of such a post which you did not make? You may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.

I can’t find any of the comments right now. Maybe they were deleted by moderators *shrug*. I know I saw one that was actually spam though.

How can people subscribe me to blogs if they aren’t logged in as me though?

Not all sites require a person to login to leave a comment, but most sites ask for an email but in some cases it is not a required field

Is there a way to tell WordPress I never want posts or subscriptions made with my email address unless I’m logged in? Seems this type of authentication should work both ways.

If I had your email I could half subscribe you to most any site by email – but most sites now require an opt in (a message is sent to the email address that was entered, and you need to click on a link to finish the subscription) – – so I could leave your email all over the internet and really annoy you with the confirm emails that would be sent

Also some spammers use fake (or someone elses) email in an attempt to get around spam filters

Yes, that is what is happening. Trying to figure out if there’s a way to stop it.

All sites control the conditions required to leave a comment – there is no master list anywhere I am aware of that you can work like the phone do not call list – i.e. don’t accept comments unless I am logged

Seems like WordPress should have features for us to protect ourselves instead……

Are the sites all WordPress.COM sites?

If not – WordPress.COM would need to get all the rest of the web sites in the world to sign onto their verification program – and change the code all around the world to add the extra check

If you can get a few links for examples we’ll take a look. Cheers!

@Auxclass: Yes, they are WordPress sites. That’s why I’m getting subscription request through WordPress and I’m asking if WordPress has a setting to change it. I build websites for a living and understand how the internet and software engineering works. Your snarky answers are no longer needed.

@Supernovia: Thanks for responding. I’ll make sure to get a link the next time it happens and post it here. I deleted all the subscription requests before posting here so I’ll have to wait for it to happen again.
