How can an ivited user access my blog ?
-
I’ve created a new user as an author. When I follow the instructions, the newly created user can log in to wordpress, but has no dashboard available when on my site, an can therefore just do nothing.

The person needs only to create a username account and there is an option for that provided for that purpose “username account only, please”.
Here is what the relevant support doc states:
They will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If they are logged into their WordPress.com account, they will be taken directly to your blog. If not, they will be taken to the log-in screen, where they can either log in or create a new user account.
Note that users who create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.
If the person is not successful post again and provide all the details including the email address of the person. The software will redact ie. HIDE the email addresses so only Staff can see them. After you do that subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks Timethief. In fact the problem was I was trying to create the new account, invite the new user, and accept the invitation on the same machine. Obviously wordpress doesn’t like that, because of existing cookies.
As I did the same, but acted as the new user on another machine, it worked well, but I had to login as the new user before I did accept the invitation, otherwise it didn’t work.
And to create another user, I had to delete WordPress cookies on the wordpress pages. (I used the Firefox plugin “view cookies” for that).
