How can I access the DNS zone file for my domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to migrate the DNS service from wordpress.com to the AWS Route 53 DNS service. In order to do that I need the DNS zone file for shescoding.org (custom domain used for shescoding.wordpress.com).

Can you make this available to me?

    Thanks!

    Hey Nathalie!

I am a bit confused, and would love some more information from you!

I see that you have mapped shescoding.org to your WordPress.com site, shescoding.wordpress.com. However, your domain isn’t registered here.

If you wish to use your domain with a different website hosted elsewhere, you can remove the mapping from your WordPress.com site, and change the name servers with your domain’s registrar. From your domain’s public information, it appears as if your registrar is GoDaddy currently:
    http://who.is/whois/shescoding.org

If I am not understanding your end goal, please explain further, and I’m more than happy to help.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

    Hey Robyn,

I want to keep using the domain shescoding.com for the website hosted on wordpress.com (shescoding.wordpress.com), so no change here at all.

All I want to change is the DNS service. Right now WordPress provides the hosting and also the DNS service. In order for me to be able to use AWS Route 53 as DNS service, I need the DNS zone file currently in use for the website. And this file is unfortunately not available under the Domain Management options.

Does this explain better? Thanks for your help!

    Hey Nathalie,

Thanks for the breakdown! Much appreciated.

Unfortunately, we don’t distribute zone files…however, I have a workaround that might suit you. You could instead point the name servers to AWS Route 53 so they control all of the DNS, and use a CNAME to point to WordPress.com.

It’s also possible to use A records instead of a CNAME, but our IP addresses are not static, so for the sake of stability I wouldn’t recommend this solution as a first choice.

Let me know if this gets you closer to your ultimate goal. Many thanks.

    Hey Robyn,

one cannot create a CNAME from a top node of a DNS namespace, so I could not create a CNAME from shescoding.org to shescoding.wordpress.com. I created an A record, and that works for now.
I’ll think about another longer term solution. Thanks for your help though!
