Hi there,
We cannot post widgets with affiliate links in them.re: affiliate links http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/
1. WordPress.com allows bloggers to insert text affiliate links within post and page content to most third-party affiliate programs, provided they are not the primary content of the site in question.
2. Image affiliate links in posts and pages and any banners, affiliate links in sidebar or footer widget areas, are still considered to be advertising and are not allowed on WordPress.com blogs.

But I have seen this on other author’s WordPress blog where by clinking an image of the cover it leads to the Amazon page.

A book cover is an image. You can upload any image and link to that image. Create a draft post first that you will later delete. After you have uploaded the image and linked it then switch to the H+TML (Text) editor and copy the code into a text widget.

When you go to post the image, there is a button above the text box that says ‘add link’ or something like that. Paste the link in the “URL:”

Actually if YOU wrote the book, you can use an affiliate image link.
Nobody can help you unless you tell them what you’ve tried already that hasn’t worked for you. Do you HAVE an Amazon affiliate account? If not, just make a regular text link.
Text widgets have to be written in HTML.

No, I don’t have a Amazon affiliate account. I’ve tried using the text and image widgets but they didn’t work. I don’t know what else to try.

Should work with the image widget, that would be the simplest thing (no HTML coding required) –
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/image-widget/
Fill in the “Link URL (when the image is clicked)” with the link to your buy page for your book on Amazon.
Job done ?

Yes it does, well at least on my blog – check the first widget on mine “Hire Us”, I just checked it and it’s an image widget – http://DonCharisma.org … it links through to our commercial site.
The important boxes to fill in correctly are “Image URL” and “Link URL” :)
The links should start with http colon forward slash forward slash … obviously !

Here’s the shortcut to create good text widgets.
Create a Post instead, and save it as a Draft. You dont’ need a title. Just use all the post writing tools like the link icon etc to put in the elements you want, remembering that the sidebar is narrow and everything has to fit. Then click to the Text editor, copy all the code, and paste that in the Text widget.

@raincoaster
We are on the same page. I advised using the same approach in my second comment above here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-can-i-add-a-purchase-link-to-amazon-on-my-blog?replies=15#post-2334360
