How can I alter the width on the Menu drop downs?

Hi @simoncmore, child themes can be used on self-hosted WordPress installations of the WordPress.org software, but things here work differently and users cannot edit the theme PHP script files or create child themes. All changes here have to be made using CSS.

See here for more on the differences between sites hosted here at WordPress.com and WordPress.org self-hosted sites.

    hi @thesacredpath
Agreed, that’s why I was raising it as , biankabooth said she was hosting on godaddy so is self-hosted.

I work for a company that writes lots of plugins etc and as biankabiankabooth clearly has access header.php I pointing out the issues of changing the parent theme due to upgrades, thereby saving issues later on

Hi Someone adjusted the main theme header.php for me so that I could have the framework on all the pages – what should I do then? should I make a copy and stick it in the child theme? The above code for the footer didn’t work and I couldn’t find the secondary navigation! In the meantime I don’t appear to have a masthead file in my WP3.9 – 2014 theme – so what I ‘ve done is copied the homepage stylesheet and created a page template for each page – long winded I know – but I am able to change the title for each page – I would have just created pages with individual css but not sure how to make that work as I’m not a coder – now the page templates work but require some modification to upload the feature pics from the original pages and put the log in box back in! I found the following plug in on you tube –

“a plugin that gives you the ability to have a different header image on every page of your WordPress powered website or blog. The name of the plugin we talk about is WP Display Header. It is a very easy plugin to use and allows us to easily incorporate (finally) the ability to have a different header image on every page of our website ” I thought of trying this, see what happens.

In the meantime does anyone know how to create (after log in) a page for clients to upload their profile this is going to be a big site and I was told that it may crash as I also require a discussion board for each category (23) thank you in advance for your replies. All the best.

@biankabooth, yes, you can create a child theme, and then any PHP files that were modified can be copied over and into the child theme. and then you activate that child theme. For more on creating and using child themes, see here. There are also a good number of Child Theme creation plugins that set up the basics for you.

We can help with CSS related things, but if we start doing PHP modifications here (not allowed at WordPress.com) then it can confuse WordPress.com users.

@biankabooth, I chatted with our person here who does theme support on the WordPress.com themes for self-hosted sites and she suggests posting in the WordPress.org forums and then tagging it with wpcom-theme and it will come up in her alerts. She is out until next week, so it might be later in the week, but there is also the chance one of the volunteers will take a look.

I agree that that making a page template for each page sounds too complex for what you probably need.

Here is a quick look at the latest 3.9 version of the Twenty Fourteen theme files:
    https://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/3.9/src/wp-content/themes/twentyfourteen

I don’t see a masthead file there, so I think you should be looking for “masthead” in the code and not as a file. But I’m having a hard time following exactly what you’re trying to do to the masthead! :)

I am trying to find how to get the link word “home” on the other pages . I presumed when pages were created each page would have it’s own code that I could manipulate, as I wanted to put the title “designers” in place of skippers on the designer page and so on.
But in the code by replacing skippers with film crew in the style-class3 gives me filmcrew on everypage! I realise Header.php is for header but the page file has no code in there. And where is the ghostly “masthead page”?

To me, it sounds like what you need is a space for a custom menu, and that’s a very custom request and thesacredpath is right to point you to the WordPress.org forums. Do keep in mind, however, that it is free and open source software and the WordPress.org forums are volunteer-based. You shouldn’t expect custom design work to be done for free on either the WordPress.com site or the WordPress.org one. I think that’s part of why you may have been redirected a few times early on!

When posting new help requests, It would help a ton if you made one request (or grouped very similar requests) each in a separate post. That way, it will be easier for a volunteer to follow through and help you. Also, you should definitely, definitely include example links below each paragraph in your help requests because that will make it a ton easier for a volunteer to follow along and understand your end goal.

Do make a post on the WordPress.org forums at http://wordpress.org/support/forum/themes-and-templates#postform as thesacredpath suggested since your requests are fairly complex and unrelated to WordPress.com setups, and we’ll see what we can do to help out. Please make sure to repeat the description of the problem and include a link to where we can see the problem happening in an example on your site.
