How can I automatically re-authenticate new tabs as myself?
-
When I’m logged in to wordpress.com and open new tabs to view posts, sometimes the wpadminbar across the top is missing, i.e. the page doesn’t know it’s me, and sometimes the admin bar is there but not fully functional. This means that I can’t perform actions as “myself”, e.g. like/follow/view my own private posts, and viewing my own public pages increases the number of page views (I don’t really want my own views in my stats).
When I try to “like” another blog post, sometimes a pop-up window appears (with a URL of wordpress.com something public api something connect), but nothing happens, i.e. the blank window stays there and the “like” doesn’t happen.
I’ve tried clearing my cache and cookies, and this usually has the effect of being able to see the admin bar again and likes working, but after a while it goes back to not being able to authenticate me as me. I’ve tried clearing cache/cookies just now and logged back in to my dashboard, and the admin bar is back on tabs I open from there, but trying to view a private page (I can edit it fine) gives me a “page not found” message.
Any help resolving this would be greatly appreciated.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Here’s the URL the (blank) pop-up window tries to go to (unsuccessfully) to authenticate me:

Hi Amos,
Do you have cookies enabled for WordPress.com? It sounds like your browser is not allowing you to remain logged in as you navigate between pages.
Please see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
Also do you have any popup/spam blockers installed in your browser or on your computer? Try disabling it temporarily and see if it happens.
Could you try a different browser to see if you have the same issues? This is just a test to see if it’s an issue with your current browser.
Also make sure that your browsers are up to date:
Thank you!

Thanks for the reply, Grace.
Yes, cookies were enabled, but, as the link you posted points out, I had disabled third-party cookies. I have now created exceptions for this case to allow wordpress.com, my domain amoscarpenter.com, and my subdomain amosmcarpenter.wordpress.com. Some of the open pages are still misbehaving, but I’m hoping that will fix itself after a browser restart.
Many thanks :-)

Well, one restart later (system as well as browser), it’s… better, but not yet fully working. With third-party cookies and third-party data enabled for the abovementioned domains, I still can’t access my private post on this browser. Looking at a post by someone I’m following just now, the “Like” button got stuck on “loading” until a second page refresh fixed it. That would point to an issue connecting to an authentication server.
I can work around it by using another browser (works fine in Opera Presto, the one it’s not working in is a Chrome derivative), so it’s not a showstopper (I usually have at least two browsers open anyway for testing my web dev work), and allowing third-party cookies has helped with some pages, but it would be nice if this issue could be resolved completely.
