How can I avoid the error msg while changing the address in Account Details?

Hi support, my name is Massimo Tosi; the blog I’m writing about has been set up by me some days ago for my friend John Caddy. Originally I put my e-mail address ([REDACTED]) both in Settings/General and in Users/Personal-settings for test purposes, but I intended to change them with the owner address when the blog would be ready. Now, trying to do that, the change succeeded in the first case (after confirmation by the owner) bot, in the second case, when I try to set the address “[REDACTED]” and press “Save changes”, I get the double message “ERROR: That e-mail address is already being used.” and “ERROR: The e-mail address is already used.”. I tried to change it with another my own address ([REDACTED]) with success. What may be the reason for that refusal? Is perhaps this address used in some place I don’t know? Instead of changing your account email address to one that is already used, you should just transfer your blog to your friend’s account.

Thanks for your prompt answer but I fear I didn’t explain myself precisely, probably because my rough English.
I don’t have any personal account on WordPress but I simply carried out the blog for my friend John. But initially I set my e-mail address both into Settings/General and in Users/Personal-settings for test purposes. Some days ago I delivered the blog to John and I wanted to change these settings with his address; but, while the first change succeeded, when I try to update the address in Users/Personal-settings I get the reported error message. So my questions are:
1) WHY I CAN CHANGE THE ADDRESS IN SETTINGS/GENERAL AND NOT IN USERS/PERSONAL-SETTINGS?
2) IS REALLY THAT ADDRESS ALREADY BEING USED AND WHERE?
I hope that now the question is more clear. Thank you in advance for any help. -
It means that he already has an account under that email address.
