How can I back up my specific blog
-
I have learned from Mark that back ups are for the whole system failures. Mark sent this to me: Our backups are primarily there for system failure and are not geared for individual backups. If you are intending on trying things I would suggest taking a backup first.
I have no idea on how to back up something that is on the www, specifically my blog. Can someone be as detailed as possible in explaining to me how to make regular back ups of my entire blog, so if something causes a snap crackle and pop of my blog, I am not having to rebuild my entire blog. Seeesk.
Again, please give me detailed, and I mean detailed, since I am a babe in the woods on such matters. Thanks for your patience with me as I learn.

Craig,
You can make backup’s of your content on your site by going to the ADMIN => MANAGE => EXPORT and then choose “Download Export File”. That will give you the backup of your content (posts, pages, authors, etc).

You Rock Trent!
Question. Where are these back ups stored? Hypothetically, if something goes cabloey on my blog will that destroy or impact the integrity of my blog? Lastly, can I store back ups of my blog by burning a DVD of my blog? Thanks again Trent.

The file that is downloaded can be stored on your local computer or you can place it on a CD or DVD if you would like. Just put in a place that you can get to it if you need to. I like to make weekly backups, but on wordpress.com I manage to do it once a month now as I am happy with their backups!
That backup I told you is only for the content of your blog, but you still have to make a backup of your photos and media that you upload to your blog. There is no ‘easy’ backup of these files. I would suggest just keeping a folder on your local computer with the files when you upload them so you have it on in your posession!

Trent,
I went to my Dashboard, manage, export and Download Export file. When I did this a window opened asking me how I wanted to open this file. I do not know what to do at this point. I want to store it on a second hard drive that has my data. I do not want to open the file with any application — Internet explorer or any other application. Please Advize.Thanks. Again it may be elementry for you, but it is new to me.

No problem Craig! When it asks you to open it or save it, save the file! Then just take that file and move it to a place on your computer where you can find it again on that rainy day (hopefully it doesn’t come ;)

Just an idea but I usually suggest zipping up the file (there should be an option to do this if you right click on the file on your computer) and then emailing the file to myself via gmail. That way your backup is saved elsewhere as well.
-
Great Idea. I do not have a gmail account and want to keep most of my emails coming to my existing account. Do you think I could just set up a G-mail account to store my back ups Trent?
Thanks again for you time and patience with me.

You should be able to use your regular email account. I was just saying GMail becuase that’s what I use.

Hmm. If my computer and mail goes pop, although I ghost it every once in a while, I may lose my back ups of my blog. Seems like G-mail would be a good alternative to having my back ups sent to their server and thus not really touching my computer. What are your thoughts Dr. Mike?

gmail is a good option and a good place for a second backup! Any free email, but gmail is a good one!

~Trent, Drmike: for giving EACH step of process –Thank you.
a.) I’ve never known what “export” tab was aboutb.) “zip” –don’t understand zipping; searched, over period of years, to get clear directions I could follow, but failed.
If–IF I KNEW how to “zip”/unzip something I WOULD be able to get the New version of WordPress for my Hosted website; I could maybe change the (default/original) theme…. I CANNOT, so I don’t have; new WordPress (2.01 –2.1? –2.2??? whatever) remains elusive/dead to me. (You Did see my avatar, right? –!)
Why: don’t computers come with directions/explanations…like cookbooks…?c.) I write content for my WP.com blog in: Word
then copy/paste, so I Think I have a copy of each page already, true?; like having a “back-up” copy–now–per your directions.d.) WHY –is “gmail a good one”?
Doesn’t it come loaded with ads? Doesn’t it get spammed? Don’t they harvest personal info?If you have any further directions: I will watch this Thread.
Thanks to you both. Thanks to OP, for asking.

a) The ‘export’ tab really is about that, exporting your content, authors and comments into a download file. Primary use is not ‘backing up’, but rather to help you if you decide to move to your own host and grab a copy of wordpress from wordpress.org.
b) Zip is just a term for a program that ‘compresses’ your file(s) into a smaller file. Say an image that is 700 KB’s might only be 125 KB’s when you ZIP it. Makes file way smaller. If you use windows, there is a program called WinZip and WinRar are a couple that can ‘compress’ and ‘uncompress’ the ZIP files.
c) If you have copies in Word already, that is a ‘backup’ of sorts. This backup or export file really is a format ready to be used by WordPress. It is the WordPress backup file format for lack of a better way to put it.
d) Gmail is a good program because it gives you crazy amounts of space, allows you to ‘tag’ and easily categorize your emails, search all email including trash and archived emails and has great SPAM control. I never have more than 1 or 2 spam a week make it to my inbox (rather they go to the SPAM folder) and it is just easy to ‘spam’ those emails and have them disappear. In terms of harvesting info….not to my knowledge, but who knows!
Hope that helps.

I know many people who’ve uploaded the entire contents of their harddrive to gmail, just to have a backup, and I should do the same. This sounds like a good way to deal with the backups; I got hooped when Diary-X’s vaunted weekly backups turned out to be nothing more than backups of technical specs. Lost MONTHS worth of work.

while storing on gmail binary encrypted archives for backup purpose may well be a good thing (let goog’s hardware works for us), using it as regular e-mail provider for private use may not due to some [Privacy Subtleties] ( http://www.templetons.com/brad/gmail.html ). see also: http://www.google-watch.org/gmail.html

Here are some really simple methods of back-up.
Using Blogdesk (and I assume the same of any other off-line editor) provides me with copies of all my posts stored on my computer’s hard-drive and periodically copied to disc.
Subscribing to my blogs rss feeds for both posts and comments provides me with another more complete back-up.
And periodically exporting the contents of my blogs to my computer and copying them to disc is the way that’s been described above. -

b) I understand the Premise of “zip-ing” –it’s the actual Doing I don’t get. I get to a certain point and No Matter which option I choose, it’s Not the right one –it doesn’t work –or nothing (that I understand) occurs afterwards. I’ve come to Loathe it. I don’t get why Any thing is THAT dense/incomprehensible. “Zip” –so un-doable (–can’t get the newest version of WP, for my website), I’ve put techies on my ‘short list’…lol. Techies: invent language –for things they invent, that didn’t exist last month, then don’t explain either one. SHEESH. Where is: Each, EVERY step (ALL) in a How To description?I once spent 9 hours trying to get specific category of photos into flickr widget badge –because two “techies” didn’t see ‘need’ to Explain the missing steps; they Assumed I knew. IF I Knew: would I be Asking???
I appreciate your helpful and cheerful ways, the rest of your replies, and: I understood them! What Options, Rain and Time wrote: I understand Rain’s last sentence period. The rest: Clueless…. There is a Good Reason for my avatar! Thanks, to each, for posting. (I will look up the references, see what’s possible….)

Poppy,
are you running on windows? If so, WinZip has a very easy wizard for zipping and unzipping files. Just Google “WinZip” and you will find it. For Mac, use StuffIt.
We would be able to give you more specific help if you told us the steps you have done (including every detail) and exactly where you’re having the problem. As it stands now, people are guessing at what specific help you need.
Also, please remember that not all of the answers on this thread may be directed at you. Raincoaster was merely reiterating the value of doing backups, not trying to give you instructions.
Edit: Your avatar also doesn’t automatically lead people to think you need step-by-step help. A bread roll doesn’t bring much to mind except food :-)
