How can I cancel my domain in order to use it for a different website

    I want to delete my blog and cancel my domain name in order to use it for a different website. Thanks.

    Hi there,

    If you’d like to continue using your domain name elsewhere, you don’t need to cancel it. In fact, I strongly recommend that you don’t cancel it — it can take several weeks for a cancelled domain to be released by the registrar, and there’s no guarantee you will be able to register it again.

    Instead, you’re welcome to move your domain. If you want to use it with a different site at WordPress.com I’d be happy to help you get that set up. Just let me know the address of the site you want to use it with and I can transfer it for you — or you can follow the steps on this page to transfer it yourself: My Upgrades: Transferring Upgrades

    If you prefer to move the domain to another registrar, you can do that, too. We have instructions for that here: Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

    Once the domain is no longer linked to your blog, you’ll be able to delete that blog. Please keep in mind that deleting a blog is permanent and can’t be undone, so be sure to read all of the warnings before you delete it. You can follow this guide to delete your blog: Delete Site
