How can I categorize Index on homepage?

    Thank you for reading this.

First of all, I’m a beginner in this.
I created index on my home page by typing [archives] in to the Home page. And now I have index; however, it’s not categorized and it’s all in one line.

    Home

I would like to categorize them by the same categories that are on the side bar. I want all the titles to be visible when categorized.

I would appreciate any advice, thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

I created index on my home page by typing [archives] in to the Home page. And now I have index; however, it’s not categorized and it’s all in one line…I would like to categorize them by the same categories that are on the side bar. I want all the titles to be visible when categorized.

The Archives shortcode doesn’t allow for separation into categories, and the Categories Widget displays only categories and subcategories. Display Posts Shortcode might be used to create the type of list you ask for, but you’ll have to use a different shortcode for each category and add the category above each shortcode. For example:

    Advice
    [display-posts category="advice" posts_per_page="-1]
    Example Sentences
    [display-posts category="example-sentences" posts_per_page="-1]
    Grammar
    [display-posts category="grammar" posts_per_page="-1]
    etc.

A simpler and more flexible alternative would be to create and activate a custom menu to be displayed in the header area. If you’d prefer the menu in a list form, displayed in your static front page “Home” page, then you may use the custom menu as follows:
    1. Display the custom menu in a custom menu widget in the sidebar
    2. Copy and paste the menu displayed in the custom menu widget into the page content of your “Home” page.*
    3. Update the page.
    4. Remove the custom menu widget, or make it inactive, if you wish to avoid duplicate lists.

    * Note, however, that this menu would not be dynamic in the page. To update it, you’d have to display the updated menu in the sidebar again, and copy and paste again into the page.

    Hello musicdoc1,
Thank you for your post; I’m so sorry for not thanking you sooner.
It sounds a little complicated but when I can take some time, I shall give it a try.

If I may ask your opinion just one more time, I was just wondering….sites like mine (for ESL students), which needs viewers to find an each topic easily, have to have many categories like recipe sites. When you see my home page, does the way all the topics are shown under index look OK without being categorized or will it look better if they were categorized?

    thank you so much!

It looks okay. But I think a custom menu, with categories, subcategories, and posts all included, would be a much better option.
