How can I change the domain name on my free site without paying to change it?

I need to change my domain name, but don’t see a way to do that without paying a premium. Do I have to start a whole new site?

If you are happy to keep on using a somethinglikethis.wordpress.com URL then you can either set up a new site or move your current site to a new address (and either keep or permanently delete the existing address). You only need to pay if you want to buy your own domain name without the WordPress bit in.
Read the instructions carefully as the parts about changing your username and discarding the original site cannot be undone.
