How can I change the how my featured image looks on Elemin Theme?
-
Hi.
I am experimenting with using the Mobile Theme setting on my site, Gathering Flavors which has the Elemin theme. I love how Elemin looks on tablet and computer, but not so much how it looks on small screens, eg. phones….So, I am experimenting with the mobile theme. I would like to set a featured image to show on the mobile sites and I know how to set a featured image. The thing is, I don’t like how featured images show on the computer. (They show up as a tiny thumbnail, which is why I don’t have any featured images set yet.) So, is there a way to set a featured image so it looks good both in the Mobile Theme and on a computer/tablet viewing?

Hi @denacooking!
We can definitely help you with this. Can you set a featured image on one of your posts just so we can see this in action? Also, could you clarify a bit what you mean by “looks good both in the Mobile Theme and on a computer/tablet?” If you could let us know a more detailed idea of what you’re looking for, we can take a look!

One other thought is that Elemin is a responsive width theme, which adjusts to any screen/device size from a desktop monitor all the way down to phones. Right now I see you have the mobile theme activated, and you might want to try disabling that and then looking at your site on your phone and/or tablet to see how things look.

Jeremy:
Thank you for getting back to me. I really appreciate your input here.
I added a featured image to this post:
http://gathering-flavors.com/2014/11/19/too-good-to-be-true-veggie-relishes/
In terms of clarifying what I mean by “looks good both in the mobile theme and on a computer/tablet”, I will try to be clearer.
Right now, when you look at the post listed above on a computer/full site version, the featured image shows up as a thumbnail in the top/left of the post. I would prefer it to appear as a full sized image, centered, much like the image you see right below the featured image now. If you look at the same post via the mobile theme/site, it looks great. So, the issue is the version I see on my computer or when I click ‘full site’ on the mobile. How can I change how the featured image appears there?
‘hope this makes sense. If not, I will clarify more.
I will look forward to hearing from you.

This is in response to thesacredpath.
I had my site without the mobile theme enabled and have been unhappy with how it looks on the phone. That is why I am trying the Mobile Theme…which I think looks better when I am able to show the Featured Image…..But, again, as above, I don’t like how the featured image shows on the full site version…..

Dena, the theme PHP script files create a 150px wide image to use as the featured image for the responsive theme. In the mobile theme, a 600px wide image is created to use as the featured image.
Mobile featured image: http://denasgatheringflavors.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/on-fancy-plate-with-greens-dena-t-brayc2a9.jpg?w=600
Responsive theme featured image: http://denasgatheringflavors.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/on-fancy-plate-with-greens-dena-t-brayc2a9.jpg?w=150&h=150&crop=1
Note the “?w=600” at the end of the mobile featured image URL, and the “?w=150&h=150&crop=1” at the end of the responsive URL.
The following CSS will enlarge that featured image, but as you will see, there will be a considerable loss in quality (pixelation).
img.post-thumbnail { width: 100%; }To change things so that it would create a full-width image would require editing the theme PHP script files (where the size is declared), and we cannot do that at WordPress.com.
Perhaps @jeremeylduvall has a trick up his sleeve that I’m unaware of to do this and have the image look clean and sharp, but I have yet to find one.

Hi:
You are right. I tried the CSS you suggested and it blows the picture up to make it look fuzzy. Not good.
Let’s see if @jeremeylduvall has another idea…..

Hi:
Based on what was said above, I am concluding I won’t be able to get the featured image to work as I had hoped. But thank you both for you input.
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.I will close this topic.
