How can I change the theme back to a previous version

  • Unknown's avatar

I accidentally activate a new theme for my website, and would like to change it back to its original theme. I recall there was a way to do this and just click on a link within the WP Admin somewhere to do so.

    Please help – many thanks

  • Hi mariannakoos!

It looks like you switched your theme from Creative Portfolio to Swell – and then back to Creative Portfolio again.

Are you back on the theme you wanted? If you’d like to get Swell back, click on the link above to open the theme info page and activate it on your site :)

Thanks for responding. I did, but some of the stuff that was already designed accurately I unfortunately lost as it took me back to the default version of the theme. Is there any way to restore a previous theme version with all the attributes/designs/setting? I am thinking of the way we have different revisions for pages/projects etc. I thought there was, but I cannot find it anywhere. If you know it would be great! Many thanks Marianna

  • Not all of your theme settings will be saved when switching from one theme to the next, no – it’s a little different than post/page revisions.

Your widgets do get saved, however. Themes have different widget areas, so when you change themes your widgets will move to the Inactive Widgets section of your WP Admin widgets page.

You can drag any of your old widgets from that section up to the desired area, rather than recreating them.
