How can I customize my widget?

I just want to have an “About Us” and “Contact Us” widget on the side that will link to a separate page with the pertinent information.

It sounds like a text widget might work well for your needs. You can learn how to add a text widget here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/To link to your pages, you can use HTML code in this format, as an example:
<a href="http://midwesttravelerdotnet.wordpress.com/contact/">Contact us</a>If you need any further help, just let us know.
note: please remove the symbols before each double quote when you use the code on your site

OK I got part of it. But I want to be able to click on each widget, and then go to a new page with the pertinent info (like “About Us” or “Contact Us”). I assume I have to create a new page, and then somehow link it to the widget? Every time I create a page, it winds up on the main part of my homepage, with my “blogs”.

I assume you’re referring to the menu below the header image. If so, you can get around that by creating your own menu. See this for more info and a video tutorial: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
