How can I delete notifications from my iPod once I have read them?

    I see a little trash can at the bottom, but touching it has no effect, and I don’t want to retain notifications after I’ve read them. I took my fifth-generation iPod to the Apple store, and even a genius couldn’t figure out how to delete them.
