How can I delete or hide this site? I am not using it now and can’t maintain it. How can I keep the name but close the blog to the public until some later time?

Hi There,
There is no need to delete the site as you get the option to mark it as private so that it is not visible to the public but only to those you wish to view.
1) Go to Settings → General
2) Scroll down to the Privacy section
3) Select the option of Privatehttps://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/#view-a-private-site
If you wish to share the page with someone then you can invite those people:-
