How can I display links by categories

I’ve assigned categories for all my links, but they appear on the blog in alphabetical order without reference to categories. Is there any way to categories links on the page under category headings?

Thanks for the heads up. I read through the 8 things and updated my profile accordingly so clicking on my username goes to my blog, http://yellowdogdiary.wordpress.com/.

Entered the links by going to my dashboard – links – and then cut and pasted the links. I assume that’s manually entering them. I’m new to this, so I’m still trying to sort through some of the lingo.

OK, so that’s the problem. If you used the links widget instead, they would sort by category (like I have on my blog, beginning with the Blogroll). But by using a text widget, you have created your own list, and it is sorted by the order in which you entered them. Of course, you can’t have those descriptions show when you use the links widget; what you can have is a short description that shows when you hover over the link itself.

Though presumably, if you entered them manually into a text widget, you can order them any way you want.
