  How can I establish a link in a sidebar text box to an unattached Media file?

  I assume you want to use the text widget.
  Then:
  a) first upload the file to a server or your media library.
  b) copy the URL of where it was staying.
  c) paste the URL into the text widget.

  What would be the URL for media files? I’ve tried a couple that didn’t point correctly.

  After step a) the URL is tipically (in your media library)
  http://yourblogname.files.wordpress.com/date/archivename.jpg (or .png or whatever).

  Just to be sure I understand, would the URL be something like:

  http://myblogname.files.wordpress.com/20140518/sample.pdf ?
