How can I find a theme with front page displays?
-
Can anyone tell me how to find a theme that has front page displays so that I can have a static front page and then additional pages on my blog (which will effectively turn it into a website). It’s possible to do this, but I cannot, for the life of me, find a theme that offers this option the way that WordPress describes in the “Get a Homepage” section.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m not clear on what you mean at all. Any blog wearing any theme here http://wordpress.com/themes/ can be set up to have a static front page.
By default the front page of your blog displays all published posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top.
That is for the convenience of your returning visitors, who come to read your latest post, and who are not likely to be happy with being compelled to click through the same static page with the same blah, blah, blah on it every time they visit the blog looking for the latest post.
However, if you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts. To do that create two pages first http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.

Apologies, but no results were found for the requested archive. Perhaps searching will help find a related postBy default the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post not a page the error message will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

Thank you for taking the time to help me. I actually -was- using the support documents when I asked for help. I was referring to the post here: http://learn.wordpress.com/bonus-round-get-a-home-page/#get
That’s where I was when I got confused because that page did not mention anything at all about having to publish your pages or make them public (versus published but private) in order to find these options. It also specifically stated that this option is theme specific, and instructed me to go and find a theme that gives you the option of having a front pageJust to clarify, what I wanted to do is have a blog on the home page with page tabs across the top (near the header) that link to pages of different, tangentially related topics within my blog and allow comments sections on each of those pages to encourage discussion. (That’s why I said it would effectively become a website.)
Anyway, I did make public the posts I’d written and have created the pages I want. I’ve got it partially up and running, if you’d like to see what I was trying to describe. The static page is not the front page, as I’d planned (because I misunderstood what a static page is). It’s the “About” page, which welcomes readers and tells them what the site is about.
I didn’t ask about the front page error message, but thank you for addressing it, regardless.
As a note, I believe that someone should take a look at the support page I referenced above. It needs to be clarified in my opinion.
(And, just by the way, I don’t mean to tax anyone’s patience and I hope everyone can understand that even when a person reads documentation, they might still have questions that seem illogical or elementary to a more knowledgeable person, particularly when the instructions are unclear.)
Thanks again for responding so quickly, timethief. Your comments helped me to figure out where I was going wrong and I was able to accomplish my goal.
