How can I fix an autosave glitch?
-
I wrote a blog post of over 1,000 words and scheduled it to post a few minutes later. I then clicked over to another window and went to check on the blog, and a version had posted that was only 339 words long.
I tried to figure out how to check whether a previous version had been saved, and finally found the revisions page. I checked the revisions feature, and on the one at the bottom of the page, it said that there was a version saved at 16:58, which was the last time I had saved the whole thing. It showed the proper amount of minutes ago (25 at that point). When I clicked on that, and it took me to the compare revisions page, it showed that the last time anything had saved was at 14:58. I thought at first it was a clock difference, but no, the time in hours in parentheses said it had been two hours ago, and the version was only a word shorter than the one that ended up posting.
I’ve read elsewhere on the site that autosaves are supposed to happen every two minutes, but that is definitely not the case here. There were only three autosaves on a post I’ve been working on for nine days. I figured that it must be an autosave glitch. I tried to figure out how to report a bug, but couldn’t find a place to do so.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
I’m sorry to say that the likelihood you can retrieve the posts is zero if you created it here http://wordpress.com/#!/post/If and only if a missing post was created on the dashboard of your own blog at Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New then you can recover a lost post or page from revisions if needs be. See here > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/03/21/wordpress-recovering-a-lost-blog-post-or-page/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/But if it was created here http://wordpress.com/#!/post/ there is no means of recovery as the auto-save is not functioning there.
Always create your posts on the dashboard of your own blog at
Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New
The auto-save works there and the post will be Standard post format unless you change it.Do not create posts here > http://wordpress.com/#!/post/ where the auto-save is not working and where you are creating an Aside post format.

I went through add new post AND tried all of those links (your blog was actually the one I used to find the revisions page, so thank you for that!) but the post isn’t there.
Autosave didn’t save versions of it except from the moment it was created, nine days ago, and three and a half hours ago, though it says it saved a version from an hour and a half ago. I can’t find that hour and a half ago version.

I’m so sorry this happened to you and fear you have reached a dead end. I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up but don’t hold your breath, okay. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Sigh. I was afraid of that too. I just hope the problem is fixable and that it wasn’t a user error, because that would be embarrassing.
Thank you very much for your prompt help!

I’m sad to say that your waiting time will probably be best spent in reconstructing the post. My advice is to use an offline blog editor like Windows live writer or Ecto for Macs. http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/ Then you will always have a backup copy on your computer.

Just thought that I’d add that now the restore button isn’t working at all. I thought it might just be freaking out, and the 14:58 version was actually the 16:58 version, and it just wasn’t showing up, but the button isn’t even active anymore. It might be relevant/related.

It may or may not be related. I’m using Firefox 22 and do not experience that. Exactly which browser and version of it are you using? Check here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ and also post any error reports you get. Have you tried using another browser? http://browsehappy.com

I’m using IE (dunno what version) on a shared computer and am not allowed to change it. :/
In the past few weeks I’ve used iOS Safari and the WordPress app on an iPhone and have had no problems.

Hi there,
We’ve had a couple reports of autosave oddities, and are looking into it. However, if your draft isn’t showing up in your autosave, our system most likely didn’t capture your previous content. In the future, while auto-save should catch your drafts, I would recommend using the Save Draft button periodically just to be safe.
