How can I fix my domain name issue?

  • Unknown's avatar

I will try to keep this brief. I bought a domain name from WordPress a few years ago with a .com extension. I recently switched to Squarespace and mapped the domain to that website with no issues. I assumed that the yearly fee from Squarespace covered me owning my domain name, so I ignored the e-mails from WordPress about renewing the name. My .com was then auctioned off and I am not willing to pay upwards of $200 for it. I just went through wordpresss to register the same domain name with the .me extension and was met with this message when going on the site: “Uh-oh, your blogs domain ________.com expired 51 days ago! Please note that the primary domain __________.me was also deactivated until _________.com is either renewed or cancelled.” I have no access to this domain anymore and I thought that buying the .me would solve this problem but I was sadly mistaken. This is heartbreaking and if I am not going to even be able to use the .me extension that I just paid for, I am going to have to delete the new domain altogether and try to start afresh. I was so proud of my domain name and this may sound trivial to some but I am so disappointed that all of this happened, for if I would have known I obviously would have renewed the name and never have bought the .me extension today. Please if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it! I have been trying to find a phone number or e-mail for anyone at WordPress with no luck.

The blog I need help with is quietamidchaos.me, not .wordpress.com (that was my original blog that became the .com, the .me is entirely new). Thanks!

Sadly, there is no way to redeem quietamidchaos.com. After the domain expired it was sold at auction to another buyer.

You can still use the domain quietamidchaos.me on WordPress.com or elsewhere, but it appears you cancelled it yesterday. This “sends it back” to the registrar and issues a refund. You can expect a refund for the full amount to arrive in your bank account, but it will arrive in two parts ($20 and $13). You can also view the refunds in your billing history:

I apologize for the confusion about the error message appearing though. That message appears when the subscriptions for an expired domain remain attached to the blog. This is a side effect that happens when a domain expires instead of being cancelled or transferred. I’ve cleared out those subscription records for you and the warning no longer appears.

To use quietamidchaos.me, we’ll need to wait for the registrar to clear it for sale again, which takes a few days. However, if you don’t plan to use WordPress.com for hosting you may want to register it with the service you do plan to use for ease in the future.

You can continue to use the free site at http://quietamidchaos.wordpress.com/ in the meantime if you want, regardless of the custom domains. But any custom domains purchase on WordPress.com must be attached to a free site.

Thank you for writing back! Yes, I just cancelled the blog name yesterday because of the “error” message – I was afraid that it would never go away and if I didn’t cancel within the 48 hr. window that I would not be reimbursed.

Thank you for clearing the “error” message. I am most likely going to attempt to re-purchase the .me domain in a few days now that the page will no longer say that.

    Thanks!
