How can I get my domain back after cancelling the purchase?
-
I bought a domain with WordPress and then decided that I wanted to host my blog elsewhere so I cancelled it. I didn’t realise that it wouldn’t reverse what I did and now the domain says unavailable when I try to buy it! (Btw, I cancelled my Premium package that comes with the free domain.) Please please help me because I have no idea what to do :( Am I supposed to just wait it out?! How long will that take? I can’t start being self hosted until I decide on my domain!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Exactly which domain URL did you purchase and then cancel?

Hi there,
It usually takes 1-2 weeks for a newly registered domain to be released after you cancel it. Once it is released, you can register it again wherever you’d like.
If you don’t want to wait, I can try to recover the domain for you here at WordPress.com. Just let me know if you want to do that — that way you can pay for just the domain (without the Premium plan) and if you want to use the domain with a blog hosted somewhere else, you can move the domain to your new host once you own it again.

I’ll wait it out, but thanks anyway! I’ll get back to you if I can’t get it back in 2 weeks. I’ll be sure to never make this amateur domain name mistake again!!

In two weeks it will be too late for @rachelmcr to help you – she can only help as long as the name has not been released – once a name is released anyone can register it – there are some people that make a living buying expired domain names and holding them hostage or squatting on them

Wow there’s this whole crazy world that I had no idea even existed… The domain was very unique and not something I think anyone would be interested in. Would they still take it? Do you think I’m just better off paying for it before it gets released? Also if I bought it for however many $, then moved it to my hosted blog, would I continue to pay for it every year? Because otherwise I get a free domain and I’m kinda reluctant to pay! Sorry for the questions, I’m an amateur at this.

Would they still take it?
Not a clue
Personally I would never let a domain name get lose that I wanted – to many moving parts for me – I got my main domain when the original owner forgot they registered it – we see people every week or so that have let the name expire and someone else grabbed it – I know some folks in a club that are going through that now trying to get a domain they had for 10 years and a squatter wants $3,500 for it
after 60 days you can transfer the domain to your new registrar if you want – yes there is a bit of double charging maybe @rachelmcr can let you register for $5.– (the base cost of a domain registration, but I have also seen some recent indicators that registration was bundled with domain mapping – but I am not staff so not sure what the policy is today)

Ok I think I’m going to just buy the domain. @rachelmcr how much would that be? And do I have to keep paying yearly if I move it out of wordpress?

Hi there,
I just sent you an email with details about buying the domain back here at WordPress.com, and your options after that. You’re welcome to reply directly to that email with any other questions, or let me know here if you don’t get that email from me!
