How can I get my favicon to look decent?
-
My blavatar-derived favicon looks horrible. Because I’m using a wordpress-hosted site, it seems (??) that there’s no way to directly set favicon.ico . As a consequence, I depend on whatever resizing algorithm you guys are using. And that resizing algorithm produces a favicon that looks really bad.
Compare scholarpedia.org’s favicon with the one at blog.scholarpedia.org, and you’ll see.
How can I fix this?

I’m checking into this for you; I agree it doesn’t look very good at all, especially compared to what it is supposed to look like.
I’ll send you an update soon; likely after the weekend. Hope you have a good one.
Cheers!

Howdy,
Unfortunately, since we resize the same image for the various sizes and the particular design of your logo isn’t handled well by the auto-resizing script, at this time, there isn’t anything we can do to fix this, short of asking you to try a different image.
We have added to our long-term roadmap adding more flexibility (uploading specific files for favicon vs using the auto-resized image, etc), but we don’t have a timeline for when that project will be tackled.
Thanks for your understanding. Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything else. Cheers!

Well that’s disappointing. We’ll try out a different one. You might consider replacing the algorithm with a better one, though?

That’s being considered as an interim solution. It’s the same algorithm we use to resize images in a few different places, so we look for a fair balance between best image quality and code performance (to keep load times as expected without killing the servers in the process).
Thanks for your understanding and for reporting this to us for a deeper look.
