How can I get my posts to show up as a listing on a page?

I would like the posts I’ve added to pages to show up as a list rather than show the entire post. How do I do this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

I believe you’re referring to your category pages like this one seen here:

    http://buttersnbliss.com/category/workouts/total-body/

Instead of having the entire post, you would just like a list of post titles and then have readers click on the title to view the post. Is that correct?

If so, the best way to accomplish this is to create actual pages rather than use the category pages like you are now. For example, create a page called Total Body. Then, use a shortcode to display all posts within that category. Here are some instructions on using the shortcodes:

    Display Posts Shortcode

This shortcode should do the trick:

    [display-posts category="total-body"]

Does that make sense? Let me know if you need any further clarification!

    Hi Jeremey,

Thank you so much, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for. How do I link previous posts? Do I enter the URL within the shortcode you provided me? Sorry, for all the questions. I’m brand new to this.

    Hi!

Can you explain a bit more by what you mean regarding previous posts? You shouldn’t need to specify previous posts in the shortcode. The code will pull all posts tagged with “total body” (previous, current, and future). Does that make sense?

Yes, that makes sense. I’ll try it out and get back with you. Thank you!

Not a problem! Yes – please let me know if you run into any trouble.

I was able to fix everything! From now on, when I publish a new post, do I save the post under a category so that it will appear as link under those new pages? Because when I attempted that, there was no new link under that page.

For example, I categorized an old post under “Total Body” and it never showed up as a link under the page entitled, “Total Body. ”

    Hi!

Yes, when you categorize a post as “Total Body” (whether you’re adding a new post or re-categorizing an old one), it should show up on that page. Currently, it looks like you only have three posts in the “Total Body” category as shown here:

Have you tried to save a new post under that category? If you’re still having trouble, please let me know the post you’re trying to add, and I’ll take a look!

Ok good, glad I somewhat understand the process. Does WordPress take a little longer to update? I just categorized an older post titled,”Slow and Steady” into my Inspiration page and it hasn’t shown up yet. Do I need to be more patient and give it a few a minutes?

  • Unknown's avatar

Of course, as soon as I post that, I refresh the page and it’s there. Sorry about that! Thank you so much for your help, Jeremey. You’ve been tremendous! I really appreciate your time and patience. I also read your blog and loved it! Good luck with everything :)

Not a problem! Occasionally, it might take a bit of time to update as your browser may have cached a previous page version, but it should update shortly after you categorize a post.

Let me know if you need anything else!
