How can I get rid of the space beneath a picture in a post?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi – When I insert a picture in a post (Flounder Theme), there is too much space under it; and the text alignment next to the picture is off. (would like to have top pf pisture and first line next to it at the same height) How can I correct that? (see “Cold War Dinosaurs” Post, first picture)

    Also: Is it possible to add content into the blank column on a page (and only this page)? (see “Stories” or “About” page in my blog, the empty space next to the text in the middle, )

    Please help, Thanks! Christina

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Christina,

    It looks like Flounder adds a large bottom margin to the image captions. Try adding this code in Appearance->Customize->CSS:

    .wp-caption {
    margin-bottom: 0;
    }

    As to the column, the one you’re talking about is just a thick colored border; you can’t add content there. However, you can have different widgets display only in the sidebars of certain pages by using the Widget Visibility setting:

    Let me know if you have further questions!

    Hi Eurello, Thanks, the CSS code works , looks much better!
    As for the wigdet-display: unfortunately, I do not have the “visibility” options for my widgets!? I can only “save” or “delete” the widget?! Am I in the wrong menu? (Dashboard-Widgets-Sidebar: clicking on “edit” – there is no little triangle)
    thanks
    Christina

  • Hi Christina,

    Your widget screen was in accessibility mode. I’ve disabled that, and should look like the support document now.

    Should it ever happen again, check the Screen Options tab in the upper right-hand corner of your screen:

    Hi, good to know about the accessibility mode. (It keeps switching back, but now I know what to do).
    I changed the widgets for the “stories” page, so there should be now widget, but now there is “META” (never used that) “Archives” (dito) and “Search” (don’t want that there).
    How did that happen?

    thanks again

  • Hi Christina,

    Hmm, I’m not sure why it would switch back to accessibility. Do you have any sort of setting on your browser for accessibility?

    As to those widgets, it looks like Flounder displays default widgets until you add one. To get around that, I added a blank text widget to show only on that page, and then I added some CSS to hide the part of it that showed. How does that look?

    Hi Eurello.
    Thanks. It looks… blank :). The idea was to extend the text part, not to just have another empty space instead of the widgets. So I will change it back and live with the flounder way. (and took note of the code, though.)
    As for the browser setting: have to take a look at that.
    In general: I’ve just started working with wordpress and realize that the themes do not leave a lot of leeway as far as layout is concerned. Maybe it’s Flounder (there seems to be a lot of working around necessary). Maybe I’m too picky. I will see how this works out over time.
    But I really appreciate the timely help from you guys!

  • Hi Christina,

    Flounder doesn’t have a full-width page template for one thing. A lot of themes do; you might check these out:

    Eurello, Thanks – sorry it took me so long to reply. I am working on another blog and will keep all this info in mind when looking for a theme for that one, and maybe change mine eventually. But for now, it’s sufficient. Take care!
