How can I get the featured image to show the whole picture in Motif?

    I’m trying to upload a featured image, but no matter what I try, important parts of the pic are cut off. It’s like it zooms into the center, no matter what size it is, and crops it. Can I size it or crop it a certain way to get everything I want into the featured image at the top of the page? I’m using the Motif theme.

    Hi blueskiesanimalreiki and yannihul,

    I’ve had trouble in the past with images not working correctly in widgets and it almost always has to do with the size/dimensions of the image I’m using. I’ve found that in order for images to display properly in different themes you have to make sure your image matches your theme’s specs for column widths, header sizes, etc. I looked at the motif theme page (http://en.wordpress.com/themes/motif) and it says “The featured image on the homepage works best with images at least 1140 [pixels] wide.”

    I’ve found that cropping the image to the exact specs before popping it into the theme usually eliminates the problem. For example, it looks like the dimensions for the header image on blueskieanimalreiki’s site should be 1140 x 610 pixels. Does it work if you try that?

    You’ll need to resize the image before you upload it to your media library. You can use an online tool like pixlr.com to do that.

    Your theme’s support doc doesn’t give a maximum or minimum height, so you’ll have to experiment to see what works.

    Yes I’ve changed the dimensions of my photos based on 1140 wide, I experimented many times to find the height and it’s around 450 for the full width template, which is the one I had problem with.
