How can I get themes w/ domain mapping?
-
I’ve purchased domains for my two WordPress blogs, and hadn’t read the notes on domain mapping until after the fact. I have questions about this note, “Purchasing the Domain Mapping upgrade does NOT give you the permission to use advertising, post any kind of prohibited code, or upload any themes or plugins.”
What will my blogs look like then? (I’d intended for both my blogs to use domain mapping). Also, isn’t there an SEO plug-in? I’d wanted to use this.
I haven’t set up my second blog in WordPress at all yet. If I can’t use themes or plug-ins, then I’m not sure if I’d like to use domain mapping for these…
-
Note – the page on domain mapping w/ notes was hard to find. The only reason I found it was from digging around the site to find info on changing your DNS nameservers. Also, Matt’s page on domain mapping does not have really any of this info, but should include more info (or at least more clearly state the pros and cons of domain mapping). This was the only page I’d found before purchasing the domains….

With domain mapping you still have all the wordpress.com restrictions that you did before you mapped. You are still hosted at wordpress.com
To get rid of the restrictions you would have to go self-hosted (hire a web host and install the software from wordpress.org).

I did NOT find the page on domain mapping hard to find…it’s in plain sight on
http://faq.wordpress.com/
As for the page on domain mapping
http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/10/domain-mapping/
it spells out clearly what you can do and not do.
Finding the pros and cons is up to you. -
thesacredpath,
I don’t think that we’d wanna go with web hosting and then going through installing the software, etc.. Sort of related, I’m confused by the FAQs even about WordPress… I go log into WordPress, and see where I can edit my blog, etc. In the FAQs about WordPress or wherever, there are places to download all these WordPress releases…
So is the WordPress application something I need to download to use the blogs? I don’t see why i can’t just log-in like I’ve done and edit my blogs from there… I’ve just gotten WordPress so this is all new to me.
Also per the last guy – husdal – I didn’t even realize the term was called “domain mapping” so I searched for domains or domain setting up…
-
also, I think i found on another message, something like you can have five themes with your “domain-mapped” blog, but if you want anything else you’ll need to know CSS and create your own… is that true?
Where do I find the themes I can use?

If you are hosted here at wordpress.com, all the upgrading and such is taken care of for you. That is one of the big advantages to hosting here (not to mention it is free).
Here at wordpress.com, you are limited to the themes listed under design whether you have domain mapping or not.
A lot can be done with the CSS upgrade if you have experience with it. Since there isn’t any official support for the CSS upgrade, it is not recommended unless you have experience.

http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/08/15/where-can-i-find-css-customization-help/If you have the CSS upgrade, you would edit and change the CSS under design > edit CSS. The CSS upgrade does not allow you to change the functionality of your blog, but simply to change the look of it (colors and such).

Thanks for your tips. I don’t personally know CSS, but I think some of the themes available now would be fine. Right now, the blog’s not on our domain yet – still on WordPress.
Will all the themes I see now within WordPress be available when I move to our domain? (there are about five pages worth of themes). I don’t really need a fancy theme so one of the pre-existing ones should work.
Also, like I asked earlier, do I have to download a WordPress release for my blogs?
Thanks again.

Most of the themes should be available, but they may have changed – possibly drastically – from the versions wordpress.com is using (which in most cases are several revisions old).
You do not have to download wordpress if you are hosted here at wordpress.com. If and when you put your blog on your website, you will then need to install wordpress on your webhost. Most webhosts have a one-button install that will install it for you.

As thesacredpath says, as long as your bblogs stay on wordpress.com (even with a domain name) there’s no need to download anything, you just log in to wordpress.com with the username and password for that blog. All themes on wordpress.com can be domain-mapped. You may find that not all will suit your purpose, but with some CSS-tweaking many things can be accomplished, depending on which CSS options that are available in the individual themes. Some allow much individual styling, some don’t.

So the notes about domain-mapping aren’t true? The note on the domain-mapping help page says that you can’t get themes or plug-ins. I know I’ll probably want at least this SEO plug-in I think I found for WordPress blogs…
Also, sacredpath says that if/when I put blog on my website, I’ll have to install WordPress on my webhost.. But I guess I don’t ever plan to do this because currently I plan on just using my own domains for my blogs, but they are technically at WordPress?
(I found on the help page – “This is where your blog is here at wordpress.com but it looks like it is somewhere else – on another domain. “
I also asked on another post where i could get the credits – I haven’t purchased any and can’t find where to get them. At what point will I have to purchase these? Our support mgr hasn’t changed the DNS nameservers yet, so our domains are still empty….. He’s out now and it’s only been a day since I logged into our blog…
When should I purchase the credits? And where do I do this?

1. The note on the domain-mapping page is true. On myblog.wordpress.com blogs you can only do so much with the themes provided. You can not upload plugins, you can not upload other themes. I see absolutely no use for an extra SEO-plugin, blogs on myblog.wordpress.com already have more than enough SEO-power.
2. If your blog ends in .wordpress.com, and I assume it does, it resides on (or is “hosted” on) WordPress’ servers, with the limitations stated in #1. It is on wordpress.com, it isnot somewhere else, but it may look like it because myblog.wordpress.com is replaced by mydomain.com.
3.If you wish to host your WordPress blog on a server of your own choice and do WHATEVER you like to the theme, without limitations, then you need to download and install wordpress.org.
4. Your domains are registered with your registrar, they are not sitting anywhere physically, but a name server can point the domain name to any website or blog you choose, be it on wordpress.com or a wordpress.org blog on a host of your choice.
5. You buy credits when you map the domain to the blog on wordpress.com; simply follow the instructions on how to map a domain to a blog on wordpress.com. Credits only apply to domains on wordpress.com. If you plan to host a wordpress.org blog on a server of your own choice, you pay for mapping your domain to that blog on that server with that provider, no credits. Credits is a strictly wordpress.com thing. -

Exactly where did you find this information? Link please?

http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/10/domain-mapping/
2nd last bullet point from the bottom of the page:
“Purchasing the Domain Mapping upgrade does NOT give you the permission to use advertising, post any kind of prohibited code, or upload any themes or plugins.” -
-
Each upgrade gives ONLY the specific changes stated in the FAQ; none of them except the VIP upgrade does more than one thing.
The domain mapping upgrade connects a domain name with a WP.com blog (you can purchase the name here or elsewhere).
The CSS upgrade allows you to customize the look, though not the function, of the theme. It does not add functionality or exempt you from any of the ToS.
Etc.
