How can I group a single category of posts under one header "button" link?

Make a single Page (or via whatever alternative method) display a single category of posts under a fixed Page content. There will be an “About Me” page; and then there will be a “Certain type of post” page, which will be accessible via a link on my header (just like “About Me”). But it must show a fixed “Page” text on top, then relevant articles grouped under it (by category).

I’ve searched everywhere and can’t seem to find a way to do this. Perhaps I’m not going about it right? Thank you all so much for your time.

  • If you want static content on the page along with a feed of a specific type of post you’ll need to create a regular page and insert the display posts shortcode, configured for a specific category, under your static text. Instructions here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/display-posts-shortcode/ Note that with this method you’ll only be able to display up to 100 posts.

The other option is to create a page with your static content, and then use a custom menu to create a category page as a child-page for the static page. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

Progress! in my Home Page Menu, for my Menu Structure, I now have “About Me” (custom), and “Holy Grail” (category). I’ve checked “Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu” without fully grasping what that’s doing, and checked “Primary Menu” under “Theme Locations”.

We’re close. Now, the two links as I call them, “About me” and “Holy Grail” appear properly, and when I click “Holy Grail”, it shows all articles in that “Holy Grail” category: great!

But the final problem is the static text Page portion I want to display above the “Holy Grail” category post content, and your notion of a “child page”.

I’ve “used a custom menu to create a category page” (I think?) but cannot figure out how to “(make “it”=that category page?) a child page for the static page”. When I view the static page, there seems to be no way to do this?

Really appreciate your help, and by gum I can’t be the only one out there struggling with this. PS–I’m using the “Make” theme, which allegedly is super customizable…

  • I’ve checked “Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu” without fully grasping what that’s doing

If that’s selected, any new pages you create will automatically appear on the menu. If unselected you’ll have to add new pages manually. The Primary Menu option should be selected, yes.

I’ve “used a custom menu to create a category page” (I think?) but cannot figure out how to “(make “it”=that category page?) a child page for the static page”.

You’ll have to create another page containing the introduction you want for the category page. Then at the custom menu you can re-arrange the pages by dragging and dropping. To set the category page as a child (sub) page, drag it to below the parent page and then drag it right so it’s indented.

However, I just clicked through to your blog to see what you have already done and noticed you actually have a self-hosted WordPress.ORG install. Up to this point the two platforms (.com and .org) seem to work the same way, but actually they are completely separate and what works on one does not necessarily work on the other.

To find the WordPress.org support forum and documents, see here: http://wordpress.org/support/ I don’t mind helping, but the advice I can give here won’t necessarily work for your blog, so please post on that forum if you need further help. Also see those support docs, as they are more accurate regarding what’s possible on your website.

Oh dear! Geez I hadn’t even realized RE the .org / .com distinction! THanks, I actually think that using all this I’ll find a solution or workaround very soon

  • Good luck with your site :)
