How can I have customers sign in to a private page?

  • Unknown's avatar

How can I use the password option to see a page or keep the page private but access the link? I used to be able to do this but is seems to have changed. Help! My business relies on this. Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Amy – You can password-protect individual posts or pages. Right now, I see you have one private page, but no password-protected pages. To password-protect a page, follow these instructions:

Let me know if you have further questions!

Hello & thank you for your reply! Unfortunately, when I move to selecting visibility and I choose password protect, all of the information is visible on my site irregardless of the password being entered.

Also, in the past I was able to mark a page as private and would still be able to copy and paste the url elsewhere. When I do it now, the url simply goes to an inaccessible page. :(

Thank you for helping – I need to get this site up and working for customers this week! – Amy

  • Hi Amy –

Are you logged into your WordPress.com account when you look at the password-protected page? In Chrome, go to File->New Incognito Window and load the page there. That will show how it appears to everyone else.

Private pages have always behaved that way. It’s possible that in the past, you were visiting the page while still logged into your own account.

If this still doesn’t explain it, can you please link me to the individual password-protected post or page, so I can take a look?

Thank you, I tried this and was able to view the page incognito however, after entering the password, the protected page has a seperate url which can be copied and used by anyone, skipping over the required password. In programming the protected page, the url should look the same as the url when entering the password. This way, the link cannot be copied and pasted and emailed to just anyone for viewing. Any advice or solutions from wordpress on this?

    Thank you! Amy

  • Hi Amy – hmm, the URL should not change after the password is entered, and when I test this, it does not. Can you please link me to the specific password-protected URL where you’re seeing this? You might also make a screenshot of what you’re seeing on your end and upload it to your Media Library so that I can take a look.

Hello! Actually, it seems to be working – thank you! Perhaps it is just when I am logged in. But I sent the link to a few friends and they were unable to view the content. So it seems to be working! Thank you so much for all of your help and problem solving skills. :)

  • Hi Amy – You’re very welcome! Yep in that case, it was probably just that you were logged in. Let me know if you have any further trouble!
