How can I import/create user accounts as part of a migration to wordpress.com from wordpress.org?

I’m in the process of importing content from another wordpress installation. How can I import/create user accounts as part of the migration?

It’s not feasible to import thousands of posts and have them all lose their author attributions, because the user accounts are not *already* created.

Nor is it feasible for me to create user accounts before the import by “inviting users” – In some cases the authors of these posts no longer work for our company.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There’s no way to transfer WordPress.com users to a self hosted WordPress.org site. You’ll need to add all the users to your self hosted account yourself. You should check out the WordPress.org community. They can probably tell you what file to edit directly so you don’t have to go through the dashboard.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org accounts are completely separate, so you’ll just need to create a user with the same name or username as the authors who are no longer with your company.

hi @shawnajroberts – thanks for the reply!

    I’m actually going to wordpress.com from wordpress.org

Ah ha! Thanks for that clarification, sorry I missed that. :)

Unfortunately, there’s no way to do that either. You could create dummy accounts for those users if you need to keep the Author information. Or you could create a user with a display name like ‘Donors Choose Archive’ and just put all of your old posts under that user.
