How can I install a plugin on my blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I was hoping to install a few plugins on my blog, but read that you are only able to do that with WordPress.org. I am currently using wordpress.com and purchased my own domain and do not understand the difference between .org and .com. Please explain the differences and how to switch over if that is something I decide to do.

    Thank you,

    Paula

    Hi Paula,

WordPress.com has a lot of built-in features that were inspired by popular plugins. What kind of plugin are you trying to install? I can help you see if there’s a way to get that feature here at WordPress.com.

WordPress.org offers the WordPress software, which you can install on another website host to set up a WordPress site. WordPress.com offers free hosting and deals with all the behind-the-scenes work (so you don’t have to install or manage WordPress yourself). We also have more details about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org if you’d like to learn more.

If you decide to switch to a self-hosted, WordPress.org site, you’ll need to choose a hosting provider first. Once you have a new hosting provider with WordPress installed there, you can export your content from WordPress.com, import it into your new site, and move your domain to point to that site. We have more details about Moving a Blog if you decide to go that route, or you can use our Guided Transfer service to get set up with one of our recommended hosts.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)
