how can I limit posts per page?

I am having trouble limiting how many posts show up when my home page is first loaded. I’ve already tried going to settings -> reading and tried to limit posts.. I’ve also used to blank footer widget option to no avail. All I would like to be able to do is have maybe 4 or 5 show up at a time instead of 20 because this is lengthening load times dramatically for many of my users. Hi there,
The reason why so many posts are appearing on your home page is that you currently have 14 sticky posts on your blog. Marking a post as sticky will stick it to your blog’s front page, so it will always appear there.
If you’d like fewer posts on your home page, you can remove the sticky setting from some of those blog posts. That will reduce the number of posts that load on the home page at first.
