How can I link my blogs by using a category in the heading?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have too many blogs. I want to keep two active and two inactive. I want to attach the two inactive blogs to other two by having them as categories in the heading. I did this once before but can’t seem to replicate the process. Help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

I’m not sure I understand correctly, but if I do you want to stop using two of your blogs and just have those posts be available as category headings on your two other sites, is that correct?

If so, we don’t really have an automated way of doing that, but I think I have an idea of how you could go about doing it. Let me know if I have it right and I’ll walk you through my idea!

Hi. Thanks for getting back to me. What I did once before was link one blog to another through a category that appears in the heading. When you click that item in the heading–which is the name of the blog I want to link–it takes you straight to the other blog.

    I think I am babbling.

Let me try to say this differently. I have an inactive blog ROAD TRIPS North America (nesetm.com) that I want to link to one of the two blogs I intend to keep active TIME AND PLACE (mneset.me)

I want ROAD TRIPS North America to appear in the heading of TIME AND PLACE and if people click it they will go directly to ROAD TRIPS.

Sorry I am saying this so badly. I need to stop taking writing classes and take wordpress-speak/cyberspeak classes.

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer. Marjorie.

Ah! That’s not a problem at all.

What you need is the custom menu bar. I’m sorry I was over thinking it before!

So where you’ll need to go is in to your remaining blog’s Dashboard (so http://mneset.me/wp-admin) and then go to Appearance >> Menu. On this page you can edit your current menu bar. On the left side, select the Links option, put in your older blog address and what you want the link to say (“The old site” or “ROAD TRIPS North America,” what have you) and then click Add to Menu.

Once you do, it will appear in the main window in the center. You can re-order the menu items by dragging and dropping. Once you have them in the order you like, click save in the lower right corner, and it will go live! We have more information on the menu interface right here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

Now if you want to link directly to some of your specific posts on your old site, I can walk you through how to do that, but it sounds like you may want to just link to the old site, and this will do it for you!

Let me know if you have any questions.

PERFECT. Thanks so much. Since you mention linking posts directly, even though I don’t want to do that right now I am sure I will in the future so you could give me instructions if you have time. AGAIN, you happiness people do make me happy, THANKS. Marjorie

It’s pretty easy! When you go to any of your sites, if you want to grab the URL for one of your specific posts, you can click on the title of it, and then grab the location out of your browser’s location bar.

Alternatively, if you are a big user of categories, when you are looking at one of your posts you’ll notice that it will frequently say that a post is “filed under: XXXXX” where “XXXX” is a category name. If you click on that category name, you’ll see a list of all of the posts which you’ve set to that category. Again, you can grab that URL, and you can link to that in your menu bar if you’d like.

See what happens…once you help me I never leave. It’s like creating a monster.

About that linking post question. I am almost there.
I went to the post I wanted to copy on one blog. Clicked the title and copied the url. Then I went to the blog where I want to add it. Then I didn’t know what to do next.
I would like to add that url address into a post where someone can just click on it directly. Do I just copy it into the body or is there a special link? THANK YOU AGAIN. Marjorie

That’s not a problem! Happy to help.

You CAN do that if you want (just paste the link in) but I find that to be kind of ugly looking.

Instead what I do is I use our link tool. We have a help article which walks you through it right here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/

If you run in to troubles with it, please let me know!

Printed out the article for future use. For right now I just decided to reblog the three I wanted to connect with a current post on a different blog. It’s not quite right but I think it’s fine until I’m adept at the better mode.

Thank you kind sir. I’ll be back…but maybe not for a little while. Have a splendid day. marjorie

Totally fair and a great workaround.

You have a great day too!

Back again. A very general question and I am just hoping you can guide me in the right direction for advice. I love blogging and my blogs which I’ve narrowed to two. They’re personal, mostly travel, daily life and media observations. Post a lot of photos with them.

I would like to get some wordpress guidance (which I would happily pay for) about whether I should merge my stuff into one more professionally set up blog or web site. OR whether two blogs is okay if your topics are a bit different.

For the first time I’m getting a little interested in expanding my readership.

I know this isn’t your topic but I would rather stay within WordPress for my support–which is why I ask if you have an advice arena within which paid guidance is available?

Since you’ve been so kind I thought –why not start with a Happiness Engineer! Thanks again, Marjorie

    Hi Marjorie!

That can be a tough decision. We have some tips on deciding whether or not to move forward with a second blog here:

Can you give those a read through?
