How can I make archives widget appear on my blog page?

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there a way to make the archive widget appear on my blog page if that page isn’t the primary one? I’ve set up my site to make “Home” the page people get to automatically, but I’d most like the archive sidebar to appear on my blog page, perhaps even only on the blog page. Must I make the blog page the primary one in order to do that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

The Mixfolio theme you’re using doesn’t include a sidebar on the blog page, even if the blog is on the front page of your site. You can see an example of that on the Mixfolio theme demo: http://mixfoliodemo.wordpress.com/

Widgets can only appear on pages in your theme that include a sidebar. In Mixfolio, that’s individual posts and pages. (Other themes may include a sidebar on the blog page or have other areas for widgets to appear in, like the footer at the bottom of the page.) You can control which of those posts and pages display a particular widget by adjusting the widget visibility.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

    Dear Happiness Engineer rachelmer,

    Thanks for the response.
I checked the Mixfolio site and saw that it’s especially for photographs — that’s probably why my blog posts appear as boxes.

How may I find theme(s) which permit archive lists and other widgets in sidebars on the blog page without trying them all and seeing if I can put widgets on the blog page? That would be very time consuming!

(Does it matter for any of them whether the blog page is the front page?).

    Hi Joe,

There are a couple ways you can look for themes with sidebars on the blog page. One way is to head to https://wordpress.com/themes/ and search for themes with two-column layouts:

    https://en.wordpress.com/themes/filter/two-columns/

Then, if you find a theme you like, you can look at the blog page on that theme’s demo. The blog page will use the same layout whether it’s the front page or not, so you don’t need to worry about that when you’re looking at themes.

If the blog page in the demo has a sidebar, you’ll be able to add widgets there. An example of a theme like that is Chateau — you can see the sidebar on the Chateau theme demo here: http://chateaudemo.wordpress.com/
