How can I make my blog work in IE9?
-
I’m using the Twenty Eleven theme and assume that’s the problem (but I could be wrong).
Y’know how the background paints first, and the white rectangle underneath the text comes in late? When I view my blog with IE9, that white rectangle doesn’t come in. The background is there, as is the text (hard to see over the dark background). The banner doesn’t come in, and the white rectangle under the text doesn’t either. The text is much wider than it should be, so the constraint of that rectangle seems to also be missing.
Firefox and Chrome work fine. Another reader has commented that he has the same problem with IE only.

Twenty Eleven was designed to work perfectly in all modern browsers, including IE 9.
Can you please try clearing your browser’s cookies and cache?

There are 7 things to delete in IE9 (Delete Browsing History window). I kept the default settings and deleted 4 of them: Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, History, and Download History.
I also unchecked Preserve Favorites website data.
No improvement.

Can you try turning on “Compatibility View” in Internet Explorer?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/why-do-some-webpages-look-incorrect-in-internet-explorer-9Additionally, can you make sure you have Javascript, cookies, and plugins enabled on your browser? Are you able to view other sites using Twenty Eleven correctly, i.e. http://twentyelevendemo.wordpress.com ?

?!? That’s it! I clicked the compatibility view button and it works now. I just wish I’d thought of that myself.
I don’t have the problem with any other pages except mine. That demo works fine.
Still sounds like something that should be fixed, but I guess it’s not reproducible. Anyway, I have my workaround. Thanks.

Glad to hear that it’s working now :) Please let us know if you have any trouble viewing in blog in IE9 in the future!

The workaround works. But I fear that there are people coming to my page using IE, seeing a big mess, and then just moving on. IE is a pretty popular browser after all.
Is there no way to have some sort of header in the page that tells IE to go into compatibility mode? Or any way to fix the problem from the WordPress side?

You could leave a text widget at the top of your sidebar stating that it’s better viewed in anything but IE.
Have you tried removing your background image? Large backgrounds tend to cause IE to go crazy.
