How can I make the WYSIWYG text screen my default like it used to be?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’ve got the disappearing text editor problem again, this time with IE11. Every time I open up a post to edit it, the editor is in text mode and I have to manually switch to Visual and drop down the kitchen sink. As soon as I save whatever I’ve done, it promptly defaults back to the text editor again.
It’s not happening if I use Firefox (which I don’t like, and can’t use at work) so I looked up what to do when I had this problem last time (with IE10) here:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-can-i-make-the-wysiwyg-text-screen-my-default-like-it-used-to-be?replies=18
And I cleared the cache and the browser, did a force refresh, and reset 3rd party cookies (which is driving me insane because even though I checked the box that says always do it for WP, I still have to approve it each time *sigh*). Then I hunted around various other support pages but none of them had any suggestions I hadn’t tried.
The blog I am having trouble with is http://anzlitlovers.com/ and also my other blog http://lisahillschoolstuff.wordpress.com/
    Thanks for your help,
    Lisa

    Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the report. I tested this on my side in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and IE11, and I experienced different results with each browser. I’ve reported this to our developers, and I’ll get back with you as soon as I have more details.

To clarify, this issue is only happening with IE11, and the editor is always reverting back to the Text Editor correct? When you try in Firefox, the editor preference (whichever editor you select) is correctly saved and opened when you open a new post. Is that right? Alternatively, does Firefox always revert back to the Visual Editor?

    I appreciate the additional details!

Hi Jeremy, thanks for getting back to me so quickly – and apologies on my side for the delay in replying, I’ve only just got home from work.
I just checked Firefox, and it seems to be behaving as normal. When I tried it yesterday it opened up with the text editor, but once I’d switched to the visual editor and dropped down the kitchen sink and saved it, it stayed put. And today I tried it with two different posts, one from the dashboard and the other from the ‘edit’ link on the published post and both worked just fine.
    Kinky things, computers, eh?
    Cheers,
    Lisa

    Hey Lisa,

We were actually able to pinpoint the error here. There’s an issue with the cookie settings in Chrome and potentially IE. Basically, this is causing the preferred editor to be ignored. We’re working on a patch.

In the meantime, the best way to change your preferred editor would be through the WordPress.com editor here:

    http://wordpress.com/post

If you set a preferred editor there (by clicking to that editor and updating a post), that should set your preferred editor from your Dashboard as well. Can you give that a try?

I’ll try that next time I’m starting a new post, it should be in the next day or so because I post regularly.

Great! Please let me know if this works and thanks again for bringing this to our attention.
