How can I merge my WP blog with my WP website?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a WP blog. I now also have a separate website which is also hosted by WP. I’d like to merge or at least appear to merge the two. At the moment I have a link only from a page on my website to my blog.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Could you provide me with the URLs for the sites in question? That will greatly assist my ability to assist you. Thanks.

    Of course!
My blog is blog.monsteryarns.co.uk and my website is monsteryarns.co.uk.
    Thanks

  • So you’ve got one site here on WordPress.com and one self hosted site using WordPress software.

Now, what exactly are you looking to do? Since you have your monsteryarns.co.uk site set up with WordPress, you don’t really need to have a WordPress.com site just for blogging. You can set up a page on monsteryarns.co.uk to be your blog page showing the most recent posts and just do everything there.

I’d like to migrate the historic posts over – plus I have a decent number of followers and external links to the blog.
I just want to move my blog over to my shop website without losing information, followers and links.
I’m thinking that’s possible but I can’t quite see the wood for the trees.
    Thanks for your help.

  • This guide will step you through the process of moving your blog to a WordPress.org install:

As you already have a site set up, not every step will apply to you. But all the info is there.

As we only support blogs hosted here at WordPress.com, all issues with the new blog–including the importing of the file–must be taken to the WordPress.org support community:

If you’d like assistance moving your WordPress.com blog to WordPress.org, we have a service called Guided Transfer that does all the work for you. Check it out to see if it’s right for you:

Please let me know if you have further questions or if anything is unclear.

Thank you – I have done that now and the posts have transferred. My problem is that
I’ve lost my followers – can’t see them anywhere,
    my stats,
    I can’t import the (free) WordPress.com template,
    and I can’t be “followed”.
I’m worried that if I close down my wordpress.com blog, I’ll be back to the beginning building following via the location. Since I’ve got over 500 followers, I really don’t want to do that.

It sort of negates the whole point of transferring the blog!
    Have I done something wrong?

Thanks again for your time and help.

I’ve now worked out how to upload the theme – although have got no further with the other issues : )

  • Have you connected your site to Jetpack?

    http://jetpack.me/

Jetpack allows followers to be transferred. Let me know when you’ve got it set up on your site and I can help you with subscriber migration.

However, do keep in mind that there are differences between self-hosted and WordPress.com sites and things are not going to all work exactly the same. Here’s a quick primer:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Thank you – I’ve been doing a bit of research and found Jetpack. I’ve installed it and now have the stats up and running but obviously only for the current site not my previous blog.

Any help much appreciated on migrating the subscribers – I’ve not seen how to do that.
Thank you so much – I wish worpress.com could run ecommerce sites.

  • I have moved your subscribers and merged your stats.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Thank you! That’s pretty magical. I actually saw my followers being migrated over in groups of 20.

So I need only to tell everyone on WP.com that I’ve moved and just leave a last post. Thanks again.

Can I ask a cheeky second question – how can I automatically create an RSS feed for my site?

  • That is a question much better asked over at the WordPress.org support forums. There is a great community of self-hosted WordPress users on WordPress.org and I’m sure you will find the answer to any question you might have.
