The way to monetize a blog typically breaks down into:
– Generate traffic to your site
– Place ads on your site.The first is the key, and there’s really only one way to do it right: create good, unique content. Provide what no one else is providing in high quality and you will start to see your traffic grow. Don’t expect it to happen overnight, but over time with good quality content eventually the site will grow.
Note most who are truly successful don’t set out to create a blog for the purposes of making money. There’s no magic get rich quick formula and making money with blogs is a hard and long-fought process. If you’re just in it for the money, chances are you’ve chosen the wrong strategy.

It’s important to point out that advertising is not allowed on a free WordPress.COM site. There are exception for affiliate links, that are not the bulk of your content, and for items or services you make or provide yourself. Banner ads are strictly prohibited and are considered a violation of the Terms of Service, and can get your site suspended.

You can apply for WordAds, but must have a custom domain.

Note: that even the Premium and Business Upgrades do not allow you to put ads on your site – if you want to sell your own ads (or use third party ad systems like AdSense) you would need to move off WordPress.COM to your own host and use the WordPress.ORG software
