How can I move my friend's Website over to WordPress so I can improve it?
-
I want to change my friend’s company Website over to WordPress so I can improve it. Is this possible, and if so, what is the easiest way to do it? I tried starting with the static page, but it seemed like I was creating another blog. This is a functioning professional Website. and it must stay that way.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What is the URL of their existing site, if you can give it to us? There are a couple options for you, but it will depend on what they are doing with their site.
-
Also do you want to move them to WordPress.COM (here) or a WordPress.ORG install and on their current servers?
-
They said “WordPress” many ways to do that and thought asking early would help the process – and they have started on one page and did not like it – so maybe a link if they can to the new site also would help.

Thank you! Here is the site URL: http://www.const-mgmt.com/
It’s very simple, and I thought I could move it over to WordPress.com to improve it and manage it. They are willing to pay the annual charges to keep their URL/domain name and omit WordPress ads. Possible?

I see nothing on that site that would preclude you from doing it here. There are some restrictions on advertising and such, but the site is basically informational in nature.
First thing I will mention is that they would probably want to get the no-ads upgrade here. The reason is that WordPress will occasionally run ads on sites here to help pay the bills and keep the free features free. They would also need to get the domain mapping upgrade to map their existing URL to their site here.
You would want to choose a theme that has no-sidebar page templates so that you could do away with the sidebar. Alternately, if you want to keep the side location for the menu, you could keep the sidebar and then put only the custom menu widget into it.
The other option would be to install the WordPress.org software on their existing web server. I see that they are hosted on GoDaddy, and they offer install scripts which make installation of WordPress software very easy and just requires that you answer a few questions. That would give you complete control and also would mean that there would not be any need to buy the no-ads upgrade and domain mapping ($45 total per year). It could be that you would need the custom design upgrade as well to get things the way you wanted them, and that would be another $30 per year.
The beauty of being on WordPress.com would be that all updates and all maintenance is handled by WordPress.com, so there is no need to worry about any of those things. WordPress.com also does continual backups so that is another thing they would not have to worry about, and the security here is top-notch, so the likelihood of a site getting hacked is virtually zero (as long as you have strong passwords).

Sounds like I should just install the WordPress.org software onto GoDaddy and take it from there. I’ll look for pricing for that situation, but if it’s a simple charge please let me know. Thanks again!

Hardest will be choosing the theme – but you have 220 free ones to choose from – not my strong suite but not that long a list to look at since many of them are not for business things
You could also add some Posts if you wanted – call them recent projects or something – let them highlight some of their strong points and help search engines find the site

If you can find a theme that looks like you want without the CSS styling upgrade with mapping and no ads you are under $ 50- / year – and they do the upgrades here so much less web Admin stuff to do
-
Thanks, auxclass. I think what thesacredpath suggested with WordPress.org would eliminate those obstacles, right?

If you have a WordPress.ORG install you have more flexibility and CSS changes are no extra cost – more work since the WordPress software will need to be updated a couple of times a year now I think and the email would be on the same server – the updating is getting easier than when I had my .ORG site
I am a bit biased toward .COM – I used to have a .ORG install and wanted to get out of doing some of the web Admin stuff – I have the no ads upgrade with my email still at my old host so I saved a bit on cost but I like the part about not needing to worry about updating the software and such
There is no one right answer and many things to think about – what might be a concern to me might not be a concern to you –
Both .COM & .ORG should do the job for you
@TSP Admins sites on both platforms so he is a great resource on which does what and things to keep in mind
