How can I move posts from front page, to categorized menu sections?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

So you want to organize your posts according to categories.
You can set your front page to static instead of latest posts.
To do so, refer the doc below:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

Then you can add categories to your posts.
To add categories, you can refer the doc below:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/

Then you can add those categories to your menu through custom menus.
For that please refer the doc below:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

This will add categories to your menus and will display posts for those category only.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Vinnykaur,

I learned how to add a top menu, as you can see, with categories like Commentary and IPN – Intelligence Processing Network, but don’t know how to keep new posts from appearing on the main page, and get them to post in those approriate categories in the top menus.

I was going to edit the post above, but see no edit function here.

So I basically need to move one or two posts from the main page, into an appropriate category in the top menu, then make the main page static?

But will it then allow me to define which category each new post goes to, in those top menus, at the time I post?

  • Hi there,

but don’t know how to keep new posts from appearing on the main page, and get them to post in those appropriate categories in the top menus.

So you want to prevent your new posts from appearing in the front page. For that, you have to make the homepage static as I mentioned earlier. By default, the homepage is set to “latest posts”. So even if you move your posts to category pages and have the homepage as “latest post” it will still show up in the homepage.

Also, I see that you have not added category pages in your menu but only “pages”.
“Commentary On News And Current Events” and “ipn-intelligence-processing-network” are just simple pages.
One other thing that I noticed is your posts do not have any category yet. They are uncategorized. Please refer this Screenshot(https://prnt.sc/mnhhz6)

To achieve what you want my best suggestion would be:
    1. Create a static homepage( This will prevent your posts from appearing in the front page) Create a page “Home”. Add any content to it like about the site or about you or anything you want. Set your homepage to “Home” under My Sites > Customize > Homepage Settings > A static homepage option.

    Please refer this too.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

    2. When you write posts, add a category to your posts. Category could be “Commentary” or “IPN – Intelligence Processing Network” in your case. To add a category, please refer the link:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/

But will it then allow me to define which category each new post goes to, in those top menus, at the time I post?

    3. Once you have added categories to your post you can have category pages added to your menu. When you add category pages to your menu, any post that comes under that category will automatically show up in that category page.
Here’s how to add category pages to your menu:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

I hope this helps you with what you want. Please let me know if there are any questions and I’d be happy to help. :)

    Good day!

This is all so confusing to an utter newbie.

So by way of a logical sequence for this, can I first change what I thought were
category menus, into actual category menus?

Then categorize the posts that have been stuck on the main page, and move them into those menu sections somehow?

I also got an email saying that there’s support available if I upgrade the account. Would they help me do things like this, or just refer me to articles? I’m afraid that I don’t have much time to read articles, as I have a home based business.

    Hello @kirasaoirseuirp,

I understand how confusing it can get being a beginner at this. However the purpose of this forum is to make your journey as easy as possible in managing a successful WordPress site.

If I can add to staff-arya’s suggestions here.

I hope I have got your query right in understanding that you need your posts to be seen under a certain category and not all cluttered on your home page. You can arrive at what you need in FOUR STEPS. Please do not be overwhelmed by so many words following this sentence. I am hopeful following these steps can help you arrive at what you need.

    The four steps are:
    STEP 1: Create Categories
STEP 2: Assign Categories to the existing blog posts through edit post.
STEP 3: Reorder your menu through customise menu.
STEP 4: Set homepage settings to STATIC PAGE.

Before we go any further, I understand you have already created the desired categories which I can see on the current top menu as PAGES and not as CATEGORIES. However if you wish to see each post be directed into an appropriate category in the top menu, you HAVE TO CREATE CATEGORIES FIRST.

I know it all sounds too much, but just follow the steps and try avoiding the big words get to you :)

    STEP 1:

You first need to create the desired number of categories, You can try to add Categories to your site this way:

    • Make sure Customiser is close by clicking x on the upper left hand side of the screen.
Then click “My Site” in the upper left hand side.
      Click “Settings” in your left.
Next, click “Writing” at the top.
      And click “Categories.”
Then, click “Add New Category” button.
Add all the categories you think you would need.

Here is a tiny suggestion, you can keep the category names brief and different from the existing top menu names. For example, you can name
What Is The Universal Individual Rights Project?” As “Individual Right Project or IRP”.
“Commentary On News And Current Events”As “ News&Current Events” or Current Events”.
“IPN – Intelligence Processing Network – Finding Rational and Philosophically Moral Solutions To Important Problems.” As “ IPN or Moral Solutions”.
I suggest this because when you get to STEP 3 and edit your menus, having same names for your pages and categories can be confusing.

    STEP 2:

You now assign categories to a blog post. In your case lets try and add a category to an existing blog post. Here is how you can do it:

    • Make sure Customiser is close by clicking x on the upper left hand side of the screen.
Then click “My Site” in the upper left hand side.
Click on Blog Posts, which will now display the published blogs in an order.
Click on the first blog post and find Categories section on the right side of the edit page of your screen.
You will now see a drop down of the categories you created in the STEP 1 process. Check the box for a category you wish this particular blog post should be assigned to.
(I also suggest you uncheck the “uncategorised” box to avoid further confusions.)
Once you have done the above do not forget to hit the UPDATE button you see on the top right corner of the screen in pink color.
Follow the same steps for the other two blog posts.

    STEP 3:

Now you need to reorder your menu through customise menu. You have to assign these categories you have created to a certain page or menu item and here is how you can do it:

    • Please click “My Sites” on the upper left hand side.
Then, please click “Customise” in your left.
Then click “Menus” on your left.
Select a menu that will display the menus you have created already as follows:

~ Home
~ What Is The Universal Individual Rights Project?
~ Commentary On News And Current Events
~ IPN – Intelligence Processing Network – Finding Rational and Philosophically Moral Solutions To Important Problems.

      Next, click “Add Items” button.
This part is important: By default, “Pages” are selected. Therefore, make sure that you click “Categories”.
Click each category you want to add.
Don’t forget to click the “Publish” button when you’re done.

    STEP 4:

    • Launch the Site Customizer and click on the Homepage Settings tab on the left.
Select the A static page option, then choose your new page from the Homepage drop down

Hope this helps. Please write back if you need more help.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. what’s confusing me, is how to assign those top menu items as categories, so that new posts can be automatically assigned to go in the appropriate one. But I’m going to print out your thoughtful and appreciated post and see what I can do with that, and if that explains it to me as I do it. Thank you!

  • Hi there,

It’s okay to get confused. This seems to be a lot of information to take at once.
Please be slow, take your own time, take one step at a time and I am sure you can make it through. :)

what’s confusing me, is how to assign those top menu items as categories, so that new posts can be automatically assigned to go in the appropriate one.

Once you create the categories and assign them to your posts as mentioned by @mywritingmuscle, you can do the following:
    Go to:
My Sites > Customize > Menus > Primary Menu > Add Items > Category > You’ll find your desired category and add it to your menu by just clicking it > Click on Publish after that.

Let’s say I have a created a category Test and want to add it in my top menu.
I am adding a screenshot for it with necessary markings so that you understand better.
    Screenshot(Menu Screenshot)

I hope you can make what you want.
Please feel free to write back here if you are stuck.

    Thanks!

P.S. @mywritingmuscle thank you for helping out with that detailed explanation. :)

It’s all botched up now. I did up through Step 2, and thank you for that.

But Step 3 messed things up. Both of the above Step 3’s are different and confusing.

    I clicked Customize, then Menus.

I see Primary, and Menu Locations below it.

I clicked on Primary. Then I clicked the Add Items button below and added my menu items.

But then when I clicked Publish, I wound up with duplicates of everything on my page.

I think I fixed it up some, but the menus are out of their original order, and my post is missing from the What Is menu category, now.

I didn’t keep a copy of the What Is post, on my PC, and now it appears to be GONE!

It appears that I need help with getting what is a page “What Is The…”, into the category and menu of the same name.

    kirasaoirseuirp · Member ·

Also, the blog posts are appearing in categories now, but also under the Home link.

  • Unknown's avatar

If you have created a category with that name you should be able to achieve what you are looking for following these steps:

    – Please click “My Sites” on the upper left hand side.
    – Then, please click “Customise” in your left.
    – Then click “Menus” on your left.
    – Select a menu that will display the menus you have created already as follows:

    • Home
What Is Universal Individual Rights Project?
Commentary – News & Current Events
IIPN – Intelligence Processing Network – Potential Solutions

Click “Add Items”. In the new pop-out window, find “Categories”. Clicking that – should give you a list of the Categories you use on your site.
This part is important: By default, “Pages” are selected. Therefore, make sure that you click “Categories”.
    – Click the plus symbol next to the category you want to add to your menu.
    – Click each category you want to add.

Now lets say for example if you need what is a page “What Is The…”, into the category and menu of the same name., you have to organize it with the reorder option.

Organize your menu and add sub-menus / drop-down menus
To re-order the items on your menu, move a menu item by clicking the Reorder link:
    – Click up/down arrows to move a menu item up or down the list.
    – Click the left/right arrows to add or remove an item from a sub-menu / drop-down menu.

Here is also a helpful link for understanding menus better:

    Menus

The link above explains what exactly you need in visuals as well, this makes it easier to relate and learn effectively.

Don’t forget to click the “Publish” button when you’re done.

Hope this helps, please let us know how it goes.
