How can I prevent the theme from displaying the images so large they're blurry?

  • Unknown's avatar

The theme I am using indiscriminately upsizes all images to fit the screen, which results in horribly blurry images. I would like to prevent this from happening, but from what I understand, I am not allowed to edit the css of the theme with a free account. Is this true? This is very disappointing. :(

    Hi there,

You are using hemingway rewritten theme on your website hmfriendly.wordpress.com.

    As per this theme’s documentation

Featured Images are 676 wide by unlimited height on Sticky posts, and 1280 by 416 as header images on single posts and pages.

If the dimensions of the images you upload are smaller than what the theme suggests then your images would be incredibly blurry as they will be upsized to fit in the theme.

Please check that the image dimensions are larger on both the width and height that is needed for your specific theme.

If you are talking about images on other pages please provide a link to the page.

If you are talking about a different WordPress.com website then you can also search for your theme here and look at its documentation for the proper image dimensions.

  • Hi there,

Is this happening to all images on the site, or only featured images? And can you give a link to a specific post or page on your site where this is happening?

If this is happening with featured images or the custom header image, this is because your image is too small for the space in which it has to display, as explained above. I can see, for example, that your custom header image is only 1000px wide, while your theme needs an image at least 1280px wide for the custom header.

from what I understand, I am not allowed to edit the css of the theme with a free account. Is this true?

That is correct. Custom CSS can only be added with our Premium and Business Plans, and the actual style.css file cannot be edited on any of our plans.

ah thats a shame i know there’s a size limiting code with css. well, gotta try to upsell somehow i guess, but it seems like a shame because users who are populating the platform but only want a free account may be faced with a decision to leave the platform or have a poorly-optimized site, neither of which benefit the platform. It seems that there is more opportunity to monetize free users through advertising etc, rather than chopping them off at the knees thereby driving them away or resulting in visitors to the site seeing a total mess which doesn’t flatter the platform. :/

Somewhere on optical disc i have full-rez versions of my images, which I can get to by spending quite a long time swapping DVDs and searching through them, but it’s a shame when there’s a simpler option that is being neglected through anticonsumer hamfisted monetization attempts.

Thanks anyway for your help guys, i appreciate the quick responses. :)
