How can I quickly delete all comments on one page older than 2 months?
-
I want my blog page “What’s New?” to be for breaking news, and to delete almost all comments older than, say, two months. As you can see, I’m rather behind, and was wondering if there were a quick way to do it. Right now, I am editing comments one by one, and moving to trash. I couldn’t see a way to, for example, filter the comments on the Comments page to get only those in What’s New, and then bulk delete nearly all of them. Or, in addition to the “Edit” beneath each comment, there could also be a “Delete.” Or, of course, it’d be great to have an automatic lifetime for all comments on that page, and I wouldn’t have to do anything except set that lifetime and any exceptions I wanted to make. Do any solutions currently exist? Thank you!

So this probably isn’t as fast as you were hoping for, but it should be faster than what you are doing now. From your comments page on the dashboard you can check the box next to the comments you want to delete on each page. Then from the drop down menu labeled “bulk actions” choose “move to trash” If you start from the oldest comments (by clicking the double arrow in the top right corner) you might also save time by checking the title bar in the top-left. Doing so will select all the comments on that page, then you can uncheck the ones you want to leave on the site.
That having been said, I’m not sure it’s necessary to delete the old comments. You have them listed in reverse chronological order so people will read down as far as they choose to and having the extras there isn’t really a problem unless it’s causing the page to load slowly for people.

Hi lizthefair. Thanks for your suggestion. Although it’s still annoyingly cumbersome, I guess that would be a little faster than what I’m doing now. I don’t think the latter part would work, however, as I want to delete the vast majority of comments only on one specific page, so the process will be (1) is it a comment on that page and (2) do I want to delete it?
Previously readers have complained about a page on which there were many comments taking too long to load. I tried to split it into two pages, one for content I’d want to preserve, and one for content that rapidly reaches its expiration date. The irony is that it’s so tedious to delete comments that the “news” page has not gotten rather long.

Hi raincoaster. I wasn’t sure what you were referring to, but I think I have found it in Settings / Discussion / Other Comment Settings / Break comments into pages. Although I will have to think it over a little, it does indeed seem to do what I want. Thank you!
