How can I register Bitly?

To register with bitly.com, I need to prove I own the domain I want to track. The Webmaster Tools Verification section allows me to enter meta name values for Google Webmaster Tools, Yahoo! Site Explorer and Bing Webmaster Center, but nothing else. It would help if I could do the same thing for Bitly. I’ve tried making a CNAME change with godaddy.com, but have not been able to get it to work. It would help if I could add the meta data for Bitly the same way as can be done for the 3 sites I mentioned.

  • As your domain is mapped here, you’ll need to make the CNAME changes through your custom DNS panel: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

I understand that it should be in the format CNAME <subdomain> <host>, but I don’t know what to enter for the subdomain and host when bitly.com says to create:

CNAME record for 8…1.worldsbestsite.com. pointing to cname.bitly.com

I’m sure you’ll explain this to me, but wouldn’t it make it easier for others if you also added a way to add meta data as I originally suggested? Thanks.

  • We’ll definitely consider it, but it’ll take much longer to add a system-wide meta option that it would to enter the CNAME value.

    Try this:

    CNAME cname bitly.com.

    That didn’t work, nor did:

    CNAME cname bitly.com

(without the period at the end).

Doesn’t my website need to be included?

  • Ah, my example is wrong, sorry for that.

We’ll need to know what that full 8…1 bit is, because the CNAME should actually be:

    CNAME 8...1 cname.bitly.com.

But, I doubt 8…1 would actually work, seems to me like it should be a full number.

I put the dots in there for this post because I wasn’t certain if I would compromise the site security by putting in the whole thing, but since you asked, I presume I wouldn’t. Bitly.com says:

Make a DNS change: create a CNAME record for [removed].worldsbestsite.com. pointing to cname.bitly.com

I tried putting in: CNAME [removed] cname.bitly.com.

    but it didn’t work.

  • (I removed the numbers again for security purposes.)

That should have worked. Have you checked with Bitly on this?

I think it’s working now. Perhaps it just took a while for the changes to go through for bitly to see them. Thanks.
