How can I replace a file without changing the URL? Or redirect old links?

I need to replace a document with a new version, but do not want the URL to change. Is there any way to do that?

We have a PDF flyer that we send out, people print out, etc. It’s updated fairly often and will continue to be updated. How can we give people a direct link to the document? WordPress updates the URL every time, so they may be seeing old versions. If I delete the old version, they’ll get an error message. What do you recommend??

    Hi!

I’m afraid there isn’t a great solution here. Even if you delete a document titled “document.pdf” from your Media Library and try to re-upload a document with the same title, we’ll append a -1 to it naturally. As of right now, there isn’t a way around this.

Perhaps you could embed the document in a page following the instructions below and link individuals to that page instead:

    Upload a Document

The page URL on your site shouldn’t change even though the embedded document will change.

Thanks for the reply, Jeremy. I will do what you mention, but links are already out there, and people will naturally copy and paste the URL from the document to share it. So all the people we have communicated with thus far are stuck with either an old document or a page not found error.

I am in utter disbelief that this isn’t possible on WordPress. Document sharing 101. Please consider an enhancement that would allow an option for a permalink to a document, it would be much appreciated!

I definitely understand the frustration, and I apologize to any of your readers that arrive at a broken/incorrect URL. The issue has to do with how images and documents are stored across our servers. I apologize for the inconvenience!
