How can I retain my image sizes as Edited when they are Published?

  • Unknown's avatar

The image sizes on my published Pages and Posts appear smaller than I created them. Everything worked fine for over a month and then I discovered this problem several days ago. The images still appear the correct/desired sizes in the Edit mode but not when Published. It appears that they all share the same image height.

This problem appears on the site when viewed on others’ computers/browsers and so the problem is not caused by my browser.

Are you talking about the way your images display in your galleries? There is no error happening—they are being automatically resized depending on the size of the viewer’s browser window. It’s intentional, for best display, and your original images are still there in the correct sizes. (Make your browser shorter by grabbing the corner and pulling it up, and you’ll see the images resize on the fly.)

(If you’re referring to images other than the ones I was looking at in the gallery, please give me a few links so I can see what you mean! How would you like your images to display?)

Galleries are fine. Images within text – eg, pictures of my and my shop on my About page are much larger in the Edit version. Everything was OK for a month. I am wondering if I (or my site consultant) selected a format for social media or something like that. Since this is an “art” site, such things as relative size are very important to me.

    Thanks very much,

Ahh, got it. It looks like your resizing has been set within the individual post, on each individual image. Here’s a little information on how to change it back manually: Image Settings–Within Posts

If you click on the little photo icon in the top left corner of each of your photos in your visual editor, you will reach settings options. If you want to enter a manual width and height (or one or the other), try the ‘Advanced Settings’ tab at the top. Let us know how it goes!

Thanks very much – this fix works.

I am still perplexed as to how this happened. When I created these pages, I just dragged each image to its desired size and then hit Update – and was all set. I do not look forward to correcting each of my hundreds of images that had been published just as I wanted them.

Could I have selected something/somewhere to convert my Pages/Posts to be more friendly to smartphones, social media, etc – and thereby “asked for” smaller images?

    All the best,

Hmm, there’s no evidence that I can see to suggest what might have caused this—it just looks like any manual image change would. If you can recall anything that you might have changed about your site in the last month, that might give a clue. If it reverts mysteriously again, definitely let us know.

Further confounding the problem is that the fix you gave me only worked once – for the first image in my newest Page (Rehabbing & Painting Brant Decoys). I have tried it numerous times on other images within my narrative, Updating both within the Image Settings and for the entire Page, but they revert to the smaller size when I view the published version.

I just got some help from my local computer/WordPress consultant. She was baffled, too. However, she did find a fix that works consistently. Within the Image, Advanced Settings, the culprit is in the CSS Class. Deleting the word “medium” from “alignnone size- medium wp – image – nnn” does the trick. (I do not know what the 3-digit number refers to.)

The fix you sent me earlier only worked once or twice – I think on only the first image at the beginning of a narrative (Page).

I have not been able to find a way to change the CSS Class

      systemically

. There must be away I can switch it off once. Instead, I am correcting each image. I do not look forward to the several hours it will take me to restore my 50+ pages….I just spent the past hour fixing my “Boats & Canoes” pages.

    Thanks again for your help.

Very sorry to hear you’re having a frustrating experience. I did not realize at the time: there is an ongoing issue that is discussed here and might give you some more comforting answers: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/images-resizing?replies=4
