How can I see the rectangular formatted tiled gallery? As shown here:
-
My “Independence Day” post isn’t in gallery format, no. But when I tried to format it using a gallery it didn’t work. That’s all I was trying to say about that post. However, that was also before I knew that the images needed to be different sizes. I also said to forget that I ever linked you to it because it was irrelevant.
On my sample post I simply wanted to make it look like the post entry “San Luis Obispo Mini Maker Faire 2014” here:
http://anniejphotography.wordpress.com/By making all of the images small and one large I thought that gallery could rearrange them to look like that. Apparently not. In my sample post I just made all of my images different sizes and it didn’t work again. Shawna I’m giving you permission to re-size my images so that they actually look like they’re in a gallery. This way I can make note of the dimensions. Otherwise, please tell me how to dimension my images so that they resemble the photos in the link I provided above.

Great! Thanks for the example of what you want! For reference, all of her images are 5184×3456 pixels.
I’m pretty sure what will get your images the way you want is cropping some of the black space and bringing their width to height ratio down a little bit. If you’re working off of the images you currently have uploaded, I would suggest cropping them to 252×168 pixels. This will bring that ratio down to 1.5, which is the ratio in the example gallery you gave.
If you have larger starting images, you can also use any multiple of those measurements like 1260×840 (x5) or 2520×1680 (x10).
I hope this helps! I know when math intersects with art it can get complicated. Let me know how I can help. :)

I’m using “Aspect ratio” and “Selection” to customize image settings but the “Scale” option adjusts the other dimension automatically once one is inserted. I can’t even scale the images (the way you suggested) in Photoshop. I never thought that formatting would be this difficult…
-
The image editor lingo can definitely get confusing. Scaling an image will change the size of your image while maintaining the width to height ratio. This is usually how you would want to resize an image.
In this case you should be cropping or resizing your images. I would say cropping is better because if you resize them they’ll become distorted.
Here’s a support doc on cropping images using Photoshop:

I just feel like some of the most important parts of the photo will be destroyed if I had to crop every single one of them. Is there not a way to resize an image to 1.5:1 ratio yet maintain every part of the original photo?
-
No. As shawna said, if you simply change the photo ratio, your image will be distorted. Cropping is the better solution. as would uploading both portrait and landscape images.
The problem seems to be that all your images are landscape and all are the same ratio. Both of these together doesn’t allow the WP software to create the tiled mosaic correctly.
In a new test post, I uploaded a number of photos that have a ratio of 16:9, both landscape and portrait, and created a new Gallery with them. My tiled mosaic Gallery was created without problem.

I finally figured it out. You can manually adjust photos in Photoshop (both width and height) by selecting the “Do not constrain aspect ratio” symbol. I made several photos all 1200:800 (1.5:1) and it worked the way I’ve been hoping for. Just one last concern for the time being. The media library contains all of the photos that are in posts. If I delete them from the media library, then will they be removed from their post as well? If this is the case, is there a way to delete photos from the media library without deleting them from their post?
-

If you’ve inserted those images in Posts or Pages, deleting the images from the Media Library will delete them everywhere.
If you optimize your images before you upload them, your free 3GB of space should last you a long time, which basically is what I said already here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-can-i-see-the-rectangular-formatted-tiled-gallery-as-shown-here?replies=28#post-1950552

If I run out of storage space would I have to buy more ? Or could I simply start a new blog within my same website? This is how my new formatting came out:

Those pictures look really cool! I’m so glad you figured out how to change the size of your images in a way you like. :)
You’ll need to purchase a space upgrade if you run out of storage space. We have several different tiers of space available. You can see them here:
You can see some additional tips on optimizing your images here:
Let me know how I can help further! :)

In order to optimize storage space I’ve gone back and re-sized all of the photos and updated every post. However, as of today, a lot of the images aren’t loading anymore. In particular under the posts named Las Piedras Blancas, Fire Spinning, Elephant Seal Rookery, and Sunny Acres. I’ve tried re-uploading the images multiple times just to see the same thing happen for every post. Why is this happening? It’s no longer a formatting issue.
-
Did you entirely recreate the Gallery after uploading the images or did you just reupload the images?
If the latter, here’s what’s happening: When you upload an image, it is given a unique ID number. That ID number is used to identify which image is supposed to display in the Gallery. If you removed the original image and replaced it with a new image, that new image does not have the same ID number as the original, consequently you get a broken image placeholder.
-
Hi there!
When you upload an image to your Media Library it has a unique file name and item number. When you upload a new version of that image, our system doesn’t know that its the same and it gives your new images a new URL and ID number.
You’ll need to go back to your old posts and update the image URLs or ID numbers to match your new images.
In the future, if you’re trying to replace images in posts or pages you’ve already created, you can do this through the editor itself. Select the image you want to replace or update and select the pencil icon. Then select Replace which will be located under the image preview.

@shawnajroberts- :) Not entirely.
The Replace Image function is rather new, no? Glad to learn about it, but, in my mind, it’d still be faster to simply recreate the Gallery from scratch rather than replace each image. This is especially true when considering the number of images in each of moody’s Galleries.
-
This is totally true. If you’re redoing an entire gallery, it’s probably faster to remove the old one and create it from scratch. Thanks for catching that!
