How can I set a higher resolution thumbnail for my Videopress videos?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I am currently developing a website for a client and using VideoPress for the videos.
The quality of the actual video is great but the thumbnail is low res. You can see an example here – http://www.jaygeorge.co.uk/gwennan-sage/showreels

I suspect this is the case for all VideoPress accounts, because I also have the same issue on my own personal blog (www.jaygeorge.co.uk).

The fact is I’d rather have no thumbnail at all than subject viewers to these low res shots. It does not create a good expectation for visitors, who may not even bother watching the video if they expect it to be the same quality as the thumbnail.

Is there a way to disable the thumbnail or manually replace it with a high res photo of my own that I can stick in the code?

    Thanks,

    Jay

The thumbnail is generated automatically from the video. If you’re unhappy with the default thumbnail, you can replace it from the video’s Edit Media screen in the Dashboard.

While we don’t support disabling the thumbnail, you can choose to grab the thumbnail from a section of the video that’s just a black screen.

To change the thumbnail follow these instructions:

Navigate to your individual video’s Edit Media screen (Media Library => click the title of the video of interest). Play a video, wait till you find a desirable frame, then click “Capture Thumbnail” button. The video will pause and display “uploading…”. Then it will display “Thumbnail saved”. Click the “OK” button and your thumbnail image (also known as a poster frame) is updated automatically.

These instructions were taken from the FAQ section on the
    VideoPress support page.

Yes but you didn’t answer my question about the thumbnail being low resolution. I realise I can change it.

The image is created automatically from the video – it can’t be directly edited.

But am I the only one that is getting a low resolution capture? Is VideoPress doing anything about this?

Did you not understand my point about it generating low expectations for the viewer before they’ve started the video?

This is what the site looks like on my end: http://cl.ly/091y1m0d1H3v2F0H2o3l

I’ll look into the thumbnail issue – I’ll get back to you when I know more.
